hey guy's I noticed the other day my car started to pick up a hesitation, so I thought maybe I had a intercooler hose leak or something, tonite when I was coming home I also noticed my car was slowly overheating,so I was close to home, and popped the hood and imediatly noticed that my exhaust mani was glowing red. does this mean my turbo is shot/froze up or could it be a bad waste gate that is not opening?

any help will be extremely appreciated!!!!

Terbo

How red are we talking about? After heavy boosting, mine gets hot enough to glow pretty bright...hot enough to set fire to various garage items (dont' ask how I know :p ) That is entirely normal, however if you are running it too lean, it would lead to high exhaust temps and that is bad. Check your timing curve if you have a logger of some sorts. It'll tell you if your timing is being retarded (would cause your hesitations)

Yeah, mine also gets hot to the point where is glows. You need to get yourself a EGT gauge.... Dont be alarmed about the glowing manifold.... It's usually normal. Unless you're only going like 25mph..... then you've got problems. But after a normal 100+ mph run on the highway, they will glow... :thumb:

it was glowing pretty red I never seen it like this before, I drove it home about a 15min drive, and I also have a loss of power with the hesitation! It was hard to get the car up to any speed, and yes my timing was off, because I was looking at my datalogger, trying to see if I could figure it out. I did also notice that the bov was constantly wooshing even under low rpms/speds between shifts and when I gave it throttle and let off!

  :confused:HERE IS WHAT HAPPEND! last night, my car had a loss of power and kinda stuttered when you gave it throttle, you had to keep the engine rev up to get rid of the stutter, so I could drive and keep going, then during this time I also noticed my temp gauge was reading a little hot, so I went straight home, popped the hood and my exhaust mani was glowing red hot, so I quick shut the motor off. let it cool to this morning. I thought my turbo seized up, but checked it 1st thing this morning and it spun freely, then I tried to start the car and it cranks strong, but does'nt run. can the fuel pump cause this to happen? what do you guy's think? keep in mind that a week ago my car ran excellent, and that I did nothing to the motor like a tune up or new mod.

thanks Terbo

is it stuck open ?

whats up. My car was running and suddenly cut off. Before that I was driving at about 60mph and did not go into boost but the manifold became orange, like it was going to melt. I was getting about 5 miles per gallon aad the car was blowing black smoke from the exhaust. Now the car will not start I changed the plugs, wires, o2 sencer, and the battery is strong. Anyone knows that is happening.

It could be the turbo.

When it is cool, disconnect for intak tube from teh turbo, reach in with your hand and try to spin it. If it spins freely, the turbo is probably fine.

It sounds like you have a fuel related issue.
Here are the 4 items i can think of in best to worse case.

#1 Fuel filter is clogged
#2 Fuel line is clogged
#3 injectors crapped out ( not likely all 4 at once)
#4 Fuel pump is burnt out

what is the best way to check the fuel filter /fuel pump to see if it is bad?, like I said earlyer the car ran perfect and then slowly started to get worse (3 days ) I drove it home that night parked it ,let it cool till morning, checked the turbo (spun freely), then tried to start it , and it only cranks, it cranks normal not slow or anything, I think it could be a fuel problem also. It's weird because it happened so sudden!

R3dR, you said the fuel line might be clogged? how could this happen? the hose looks 2 big to get clogged? not saying it can't happen, but what could clog it? can a fuel filter get so bad that it can clog up and stop fuel from getting to the motor.

The stock fuel lines are metal and in RARE cases can choke up kind of like old pipes in your house.

The instance is really rare but if you had checked all the other options and there was a restriction you could check the lines.

Do this.....remove the fuel line from the fuel rail on the "inlet side of the rail"

Have a friend turn the key on but not start the car and turn it back off really fast.

have him say and do this "on one thousand off"

If the pump, filter and line are ok you will get a gulp of fuel ( you may want to direct this fuel into a container as to not get it all over, and then dispose of it in a proper fashion and do this outside of the garage to get away from any open flames.)

If you dont get a rush of fuel you can rest assured that if your fuel pump has power that you have isolated the area of the problem and can then proceed to pull your pump and check the filter and pump out.

Also with the pump pulled you can have air blown threw the line and make sure the line is clear. ( but keep in mind when you put it allback together you have to do a little extra cranking to get fuel back into the line to the front of the car.)
