As the title states, I installed my Coil On Plug setup, and the car idles and runs beautifully until i hit 4500rpm's then it sputters and backfires, won't go any higher. I then put the original plug wires and everything back on and it runs fine, anybody have a clue as to what is happening? i searched the forum, found similar results with backfiring, but not being limited to 4500rpm.

What driver are you using, MSD, Crane or sparktech?

On our car you need a driver to power the extra coils. The stock coil pack is proven up to 500hp. Coil on plugs need more power since they have an extra two coils. Thus the need for a driver.

Pretty sure its just that setup there(it came with the car) whats weird is how beautifully smooth it runs, until you hit 4500rpm.
Not sure if this makes a difference, but the car has a 2.3l stroker kit, with Comp cams, a big 16g turbo, tuned with Ecmlink at 18lbs, I was told by the guy i got it from it should be about 350whp.

You might have to cut the boots probably not making good contact with spark plugs. Also try using electric grease in boots.

they have electric grease in them, but now that you mention this, are the contacts inside the boots supposed to be perfectly round, or round until the end where it is bent right through the middle?

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but the issue here is there isnt enough power to ignite the fuel past that rpm/compression. I had the same issue with a COP on my 2g, idles and drives fine, but under load, it wont do anything, just sputtered and lightly backfired. You need a DIS-2 or ARK-2 CID box to provide the power needed. Coil on plug setups really arnt any better than the OEM coils/wires, they just look pretty. the stock ignition system will provide enough spark power for 99% of what you can throw at these cars. Throw a CID box in with a COP system, and your good to go. Hope this helps anyone with this issue.

From my tuner:

"You should get an ARC2 or DIS2 for the COP ...in all honesty though COP is pretty but they dont work well unless you have a SparkTech unit... The ones that use 300m or CBR coils are meant for a sequential spark system...not a waste spark system .....What that means to you is they are only designed to be fired once Every other engine revolution and when you wire them up to a DSM they are getting fired EVERY engine revolution... (DSM utilizes a 2 coil waste spark system) ... That means the coils only get half the recharge time they are designed to be run, and cannot create a good spark because of this... It will also overheat the coil and cause premature failure..."
