i have a 99 GSX with the stock suspension, when i begin to come to a stop, my car starts to shake and i can feel it through my steering wheel and well through the seat. A few people tell me i might need a front end alingment. I was just checking here to see if you guys had any suggestions. Thanks

Check your brake rotors. They may be warped. I had that problem on an old Subaru (and my current Talon, which still needs to be fixed) and replacing the rotors and pads completely stopped the shaking. Although, at highway speeds, I would shake all the time. I would check for warping first on the brake rotors. If you do end up getting new rotors, start torquing your wheels down to factory spec so they don't warp again. Hopefully, someone else will post up something else for you to check, as I could be wrong.

Chris.

ill check the rotors, at high speeds, the cart does not shake, it just does it when i apply the brakes to stop qucikly. as for the ball joint recall i have no idea...i havent had this car too long

Go to a dealer. They can look up whether the recall has already been done. If it hasn't been done, do it. It's free and could save your life.

ive gotten the car aligned now, but it still shakes, could it be the rotors?

You are getting annoying.

Verify that the ball-joint recall has been done.

If it has, then the second thing on my list is to check the front hubs / wheel-bearings.

Neither of these would cost you any money, since the first is a recall and anyone can check the hubs / wheel-bearing for play. Even more: If either of these are the problem, then the alignment you just got was wasted.

Rotors are farther down my list since it is more work and is unlikely to cause a noticeable problem only a low speeds. Also low on the list is checking the wheels' balance, since this is both unlikely and costs money. But if you'd rather spend money than listen, knock yourself out and have your rotors turned.

yeah my car (97 gs-t) did the same thing...its caused by going really fast and stopping fast...by stopping it heats up the rotors and the begin to warp real bad..so just machine them and it will be ok

Rotors that are bad will make the car shake at any speed, as long as the brakes are applied. It sounds like you need a brake and rotor job. Try to get them resurfaced, if you can't, look into some power slot rotors. (slotted only; crossdrilled is useless and gives it more chance to crack) Your alignment is fine as long as you can let go of the wheel and the car will stay in a straight line (at constant speed. Accel will obviously give you torque steer and braking vice versa ect ect ect ect.) :dsm:

Really? He has a 2G, so he has equal-length axles, front and rear. He also has brakes on all four wheels.

Accelerate from a stoplight and if your car goes in a perfectly straight line you can give me som more negative reputation points.

If your car is shaking ONLY when you apply the brakes, change out your rotors and pads. Instead of getting them resurfaced, go ahead and get some slotted ones. It's always better to upgrade when you get the chance. I had this problem just 2 weeks ago, changed my rotors and pads, and now the problem is fixed. It's also an EXCELLENT IDEA, if you haven't done so already, to check on your car's recalls. As was already stated, it could save your life. :dsm:

Everyone seems to have a good idea as to what the problem is, but what the hey, i'll thow in my two-sense.

If at highway speeds the car shakes it could be the wheel bearing and/or out of balance tires.

If you feel it just when applying brakes then most definetly you have warped rotors. I have had the same problem and I dont really know how to tell if it is the rear or front rotors. As far as I know and I'm no mechanic, its kind of dificult to tell by just eye balling the rotors. Sometimes if you take off the pads, you can tell you have a warped rotor because the pad wear is uneven

Good luck with your car

Can't. It says I have to spread stuff around, first.

It goes without saying that my car launches straight. There's a reason for that bracket which holds the AC and the left front axle.

Has the thread-starter had the ball-joint recall done yet? Or does the lack of replies from him mean a wheel fell off and he hit a tree?

- Jtoby

check your axles! I had the same prob. and I had my axle replaced and it was gone.

LOL i didnt hit a tree, the ball joint recall HAS been done. i got the rotors replaced with brembo slotted rotors and new endless pads....problem fixed :thumb:

ther is no local mitsu dealer in my area but i do have a dodge shouldnt they be able to check to see if the ball joint has been replaced considering the same dealer sold talons it makes sense to me :dsm:
