okay I recently bought a 90 Talon AWD from a friend about 5 months ago it popped a head gasket (oil coming out the front of the block pretty good).. When I diagnosed the car then it started and idled perfect no problems. I was the last person to start and shut off the car.

>>Fast forward to yesterday>>

I bought the car from him knowing I had to replace the head gasket and a couple of other little issues. well I tried to start it to drive it on the trailer and it will not start. pushed it on the trailer and brought it to my garage. heres the list of what has been checked off..

compression 1-150 2-90 3-150 4-150 (assume 2 is the blown cylinder)
fuel pressure constant 40 psi while cranking
igntion if you spray starting fluid it will chug till the fluid is gone.
new plugs bpr7es old ones fouled.

I pulled the fuel return line off the car and while cranking no fuel at all comes out the regulator but the second you turn the key back fuel squirts out. same story if you hot wire the pump from the firewall. so this kind of leads me to believe it is holding the injectors open.

I hooked a noid light to the injector clips. I used a gm noid since I dont have a "import" light. it did not light up at all, (I verified the noids operation to be okay).

If you leave the car sitting for a couple of hours it will start for about 1/2 second then thats it no more chance it just cranks with no start attempt.

If you pull the new plugs they are wet with fuel.

I put a stethescope on the injectors while cranking and I swear I think I could hear the injector ticking although it was not as loud as I would expect.

the owner 2 people ago put the battery in the back. I CANNOT find the piece that used to be beside the battery that had the MPI and 2 other fuses in it!! is it possible to remove this.

Questions:

1. Any ideas on why it won't start?
2. Where is the fuel pump relay, MPI relay located at?
3. Fill in the blank

any help would be appreciated.. I am a long time 2g owner I used to have a pretty quick GST.. this 1g is kicking my arse already

Hey there see if your car has the fuel pump rewire and check the fuse.If thats good you might want to piggy back a ecu in it the caps might have crapped out on you hope some of this helps

Unfortunately I had almost the exact same problem......

What you will need to do is drop your gas tank and clean out all of the old bad gas (along with some rust and crud, I would be willing to bet).

I am 99.9% sure this will solve your problem (as nothing is ever 100% with DSMs  )

At the very least, it will solve the "fuel getting to fuel rail, but return hose dry" problem. This is exactly what was happening in my GSX. If you'd like details as to how this exactly happens, I would be more than willing to go into detail......Just let me know.

*Very basically*
Even after replacing vitrually every component in the fuel system, I still was having no-start issues. The car would try her hardest, but just couldn't get going. I finally decided (after way too long) to drain the gas tank and clean it. you would not believe what was in there.
There were chunks of rust that (apparently) were immediately clogging the in-tank filter upon startup.

Since you are seeing proper pressure at the rail (I was not), you might want to swap your Fuel Pressure Regulator. I have a spare I could send you that may or may not work, just let me know.

These problems happen to be my specialty, LOL. We will get this figured out, not to worry :thumb:

Addendum to previous post....
I thought about it for a bit, and there are a few more things you can try after you've dropped the tank and cleaned it...
Have you tried manually firing the injectors via spinning the CAS?
Have you checked for voltage at the injector clips, and/or checked relevant ECU pins to see if the ECU is firing the injectors? Pins are as follows: 51, 52, 60, 61 respectively (1-2-3-4). You should see battery voltage with KOEO, and voltage should drop to ~ground (0) each time the ECU tries to fire the injector (while cranking).
Checked resistance on the injectors? (2-3 ohms is spec).
I assume you have swapped the fuel filter. If not, better do that, too.

Most of the time, when a car has sat for more than a couple months, the gas gets old and..well...pretty nasty. If cleaning the tank doesn't work (drain the tank via the drain plug - 24mm bolt IIRC, then drop the tank and just spray it out with some high pressure water, then let it dry for a couple days), there are a few more things we can try. But my DSM jedi senses tell me that your problem lies somewhere along these lines.....

How did I know when I saw your name I'd see *bad gas*? LOL

If the injectors are soaking the plugs, it would lead me to believe you have no spark.

Test the coil pack's primary and secondary coils. I'll post a helpful link in a couple minutes (I have to find it first).
Secondly, test the plug wires and make sure they're not bad.
I would also look at the ECU and make sure the capacitors aren't bad.

Haha, I didn't even have to read the whole post....As soon as I saw the title I was like "yep, been there, done that" LOL

yeah, but if there was no spark, how would the car be able to run on the starter fluid, or try to start intermittently?

Ahh, good point.
So that would rule out plugs, wires, and coil pack for the moment.

So yeah, I would be looking at the CAS and the ECU.

....and bad gas.....

LOL ROFL
Sorry, couldn't resist. LOL.

(By the way, Damien is right also, as usual. I didn't think of the ECU -- I kind of just automatically assume people have looked into it. My bad. LOL.)

I got all the engine work done and drained the gas tank by extending the hose after the filter and powering the fuel pump instead of draining the tank. I put new 93 in and after 5 minuted of trying to start (cycling old gas?) it fired right up and now runs perfect...

thanks for the help guys.

^^^^^^^^

In yo' FACE, Damien!!!

ROFL (haha)

I'm glad you got her going, congratulations :)
