Car doesn't crank

Hi, probaly something stupid but I really didn't know what to search for.
My car on the ON position doesn't do jack now but make a winding noise from under the hood. No clicks, no cranking, nothing... just that noise. Any quick fix?

Try changing the battery...If its that dead good chance the alt. is dead as well. The noise I would say could be a relay, but if its dead?? Im not sure then.

1. jump the car, if it starts battery is dead follow step two. If problem persists, check the starter.

2. Disconect the neg terminal while the car is running. If the car stays on, you need a new battery. If the car dies, you need a new alternator.
