I've got a 1996 Eagle Talon ESi with the 2.0 DOHC / 5 spd. The cars 99% stock (CAI is the only mod right now) I just added new NGK plugs and MSD wires too it and replaced the valve cover gasket (leaking into the spark plug holes). The motor will once in awhile (like once every other day) will start too run really ruff and lose all power and will die (doen't matter if you hit the thottle or not, it'll still die), but will start right back up and run fine for a day or soo untill it does it again. Every time it dies it'll start right back up. I did a self sionostic test and only flashes double 55 showing nothing wrong. Anyone here having this problem or know what might be causing this. Thanks for any help you all can give.

make sure your thorttle body is cleaned up. A dirty one can cause a rough idle. A little brake cleaner should help, quiet it down, but don't light yourself on fire.

Make sure your air filter is clean, and replace it with a K&N or an AEM Dryflow filter.

Make sure your using standard NGK plugs, and that the msd plug wires are pushed down all the way.

Will the car die while driving down the road or is it only when you start it, or come to a stop and it idles?

"the valve cover gasket (leaking into the spark plug holes)"
Ok so you did the value cover gasket did you make sure all the seal for the spark plug circle in the head gasket where in the correct spot i did the same thing and oil was filling up in on of the spark plug holes and i was loseing alot of power make sure the seals for the spark plug are in the correct spot, make sure you didn't leave a vac line unhooked also check your spark plug wires make sure there no rust on the connections and they are all locking into the coil also make sure there good contact on the plug

It started dieing just while it was idling (never just after starting it), it's died a couple times while driving it into at lower rpm, but mostly when you come too a stop or sitting at a light or drivethrew.

I'll try cleaning the TB. The plugs are NGK type R's and all the wires are good and tight. It's got a K&N filter on it now that's only a couple months old, but i'll make sure it's clean.

Yea, i replaced the inner hole gaskets also.

Look at your ECU. If it only has 1 plug going into it, that's most likely your problem. If it has two, the do as the other members say.

All 95's and some 96's have the 1 plug ECU. I was experiencing the same problems, not knowing what they were until one day the car just died and refused to restart. The ECU had finally given up. Once I replaced it she fired up, and she hasn't died on me yet. (it's a known problem for the 1 plug ECU's to allow the car to die, and restart as if nothing ever happened.)

Since the problem usually occurs while idling there are a few things you might want to check.

O2 sensor, egr valve, and TPS problems are most commonly associated with bad idling and the car dying. Although, you said your not throwing a code which definately makes you wonder if dsmcrazy is right about the ECU.

goodluck figure anything else out let us know

I just went out and pulled codes 12 and 31 from it. This is the first time it's thrown any codes in a long long time. Do any of you have a link too a page that show all the codes for the 2nd gen cars, my Chilton book only shows codes for the 94 and earlyer for some reson.

LOL, my boy had turned on one of the map lights and it drained my battery the other day, that'd exsplain code 12. I've also been using the A/C the last week or so, but it's been dying on me before i started turning on the AC. Does that mean that it might still be my ECU? Does anyone know what the voltage on the TPS is supose too be set at?

If you want to check the TPS just pull it off and check the little plastic teeth in it sometimes they wear out over time.

You can also wait till the car dies then unplug it and start it back up and see if it continues to die.

Fill out your vehicle profile, it will help people help you out a lot more.
