My buddies 95 talon TSI AWD doesn't run like it should. We have a logger but, the timing isn't as high as it is supposed to be. We have the SAFC-II at -49 (only goes to -50) from about 6,500rpm's-7,000rpm's and the timing for that area is around 10*. We also have a MAFT to lean it out even more if need be but, does it sound like we need to go leaner? His mod's are 20G, 625cc injectors, GReddy Profec B spec-II BC, GT-spec DP and Apexi N1 exhaust, Dejon Tool FIC, motor is also fully built. It seems to sputter and make a popping noise every other 200rpm's or so after 5,500rps and a couple pops around 3,500rpm's also. Another thing is that it seems whenever he gets on it pretty hard and it starts popping that the temp. guage rises (water temp does, not EGT, EGT does also as normal).
What do you guys think is going on?
Anyone else running a similar setup that can give us a few pointers and maybe what settings they are at for a ball park figure to use?
Personally, I don't think we need to be THAT lean, I've never seen anyone elses setting that low but, it seems the leaner the better every time.
Any ideas? Sorry, I don't have the exact log numbers, he might actually make his own post soon and have them for you guys to review. We are going to test and tune again tonight so any advise will be useful. THANKS.

Sorry so long.

Any knock?

Try zeroing the afc out and using the MAFT to compensate for the injector size. Then after you have the correct injector size use the afc to fine tune.

i think the 625cc injectors are hann racecraft .......now in a perfect world the timing on that car should be where at 7000rpm 19-21 is that right or wrong

We actually tried richening at the points where it was pulling and it didn't really change or it got a little worse but, when we leaned it out more at the points where we were pulling timing they moved to about 0-(+1). The link that was posted above will probably be very useful when we put our heads together. This really is our first time tuning with a logger and we've read alot about it so we're just going to do our best. So we are probably too lean huh?

please try this for the sake of that car's engine; put your safc sliders to -20 across, and log it, this should give you a nice conservative run on 625cc injectors. After that start leaning out a little bit at a time. -49 is way too lean, and your car is knocking like crazy to keep itself together. You are hiding almost half the airflow from ecu and still getting 10 timing. If the stock timing map allows for 15-16 max, you should be way over that value when hiding %50 air. The less air ECU sees the more timing it will give you. Try to stay conservative with your tuning and timing, you do not need much timing for pump gas.

Thanks for the advise. We'll try your suggestion and see how it works out. If that motor goes he will be PISSED! He's just had this car for a long time (about 2 years) and it never ran right, he came sooo close to giving up on it (I really feel bad for the guy), its just now starting to get faster and he is getting pretty phsyced about it and if this thing blowes....... you probably saved us from a mistake. THANKS again.

i went to -20 all across the afc no help the car just ran terrible then as some one said i tried all zeros even worse couldn't even get any rpms the car just wouldn't go.... nemore ideas please help......almost ready to give up......soon to be car for sale

why dont u guys look at your fuel trims to see if they are close to 100? WHATEVER u do dont be impatient and blow that thing up. my buddie and i here in PC put a motor together and we were impatient and blew the head gasket 2 times.

Checheck for boost leaks .. The reason your car runs good at -49 % is because the ECU thinks your barely flowing any air .. but your real problem is your running rich ..im having the same problem and cant figure out why .. even at -49% your car is still running rich more then likely but like i said the ECU just adds timing ..so check for boost leaks and get back to us
DOnt put the sliders back on - 49%

i have looked for boost leaks a million times i have replaced them all.... i just don't know whats wrong
