I have a 90 GSX and for some reason i cannot pass smog.. actually shops wont even test it because they put the sniffer in my exhaust for 30 seconds and the Carbon monoxide (CO) is 10% over and the limit in CA is 1.0%. three shops told me they wont test it because it will break their machine. I just got the car running better than ever so idk whats wrong. has brand new plugs and wires (bpr6es), compression is 160 in 3 cylinders and 150 in the other. Timing for some reason was at 10 degrees so i changed it to 5 but that didnt help although the car runs better. vacuum is at -18 at idle. I put everything on the car back to stock except the tdo5h big 16g turbo that came off of a galant jdm engine from japan. i have no idea why it is running so rich if anyone has any ideas i would really appreciate the help i cant drive the car until i get it smogged my tags are from 07. THANKS.

I just replaced the pcv valve, a brand new catalytic converter was installed by the previous owner just before i bought it in 07 so i think it should be fine, if the egr or 02 were the problem wouldnt i be getting a check engine light? how do i test them to make sure there working right? i have a datalogger so i can check the cel's or look at anything else, any ideas what i should look at with the logger?

Make sure the converter is a converter and not just a mock one. Carbon Monoxide is caused from unburned fuel so something is causing your car to run extremely rich. A slow reacting o2 sensor won't throw a light on our cars. That would be where I would start.

They probably put on a cheapo aftermarket cat instead of a spendy oem type one.

You could have an o2 that is almost dead and it still probably wouldn't throw code. Do you have a way to see if the o2 is cycling correctly? It should start cycling within a couple minutes of starting the car; if you have to drive it for a while before it starts cycling the o2 heater is probably bad. o2's get slow over time, so you should probably get a new one anyways. Change your oil before the emissions test also, that could help slightly.

i will probably just go ahead and get a new o2 sensor and see if that helps.. another thing i was just thinking about is my car is a 90 and i know it has a 91-94 ecu in it because the tach doesnt work, also my logger picks it up as a federal ecu but my car is a california car with all the ca emissions crap on it. could this be why im not passing?
