cant get transmission in

So you're doing this with the engine in the car right? And you're also POSITIVE the splines are in good condition on both sides? The splined shaft in the trans needs to be lined up and go through to fit, which is the hardest part I think. Moving the engine clockwise some here and there, to change how the shaft actually is, that's probably the only thing I can think of, besides taking the engine out of the car. alot more disassmbling / putting back together but honestly doesn't take that long. I've only put the trans on outside the car and I still had some difficulty lining up the shaft, sometimes I wonder how it's even possible to do it in the car LOL best of luck to you man.

Check to make sure its an AWD flywheel, I am pretty sure that there is a difference. Are you having trouble lining up the splines? Does the transmission not meet the block? if so how big of a gap do you have? Need a little more information. Also this thread is one of many that talks about having the correct flywheel

Flywheel

Feed the starter bolts through to help line things up. That's what I did with the engine in the car. Also r u sure your clutch disc is lined up properly?

yeah I forgot to ask this^^^
did you use the special tool to hold the clutch disc centered for installation?

to the guy above....he already mentioned the fact that all the parts are correct fitment...

Are you trying to do this in the car ? if so . . . stop & put the engine & trans together out of the car & drop the assembly in. Not enough room in the engine bay to do it . . .

Yes there is. You have to drop the cross member on the trans side, and remove the splash shields, and take damn near everything out of the way on the trans side. But it is doable, and easier than trying to bolt the trans to the block on the ground if your doing it by yourself.

Just use a jack with a wood block, or a proper trans jack, and get it up there close, and start pulling the trans onto the engine with the bolts.

Make sure to lube up the input shaft with just a little bit of wd-40 or something similar to help get into the clutch disc. But no so much as it would run off and make the clutch slip.

Also make sure your using the correct flywheel fwd/awd are different.

This is for lude and tsi 93. Thanks guys for assuming I'm not dumb enough to leave the transmission in the car. And also for diagnosing the possibility of a flywheel diameter it was a fwd flywheel and not a awd flywheel .I and the rest of dsm fans thank you.

You to Ricky :)

Yes there is.

^ Correct. ^ Lightly greasing the spline shaft is also good advice.

There is plenty of room to do it. It's not fun, but certainly do-able. I was able to install my transmission by myself with the motor in the car. Just be sure to properly support the engine. I use a cherry picker to hold the engine, that way I can angle the engine up/down to help finesse the spline shaft into the clutch.

One thing you absolutely should NOT do, is allow the transmission to hang unsupported from the clutch/spline shaft.

I'd have to disagree. Yesterday I dropped my trans, replaced the seal and put it back. Engine stayed in the car.

I would recommend for op to take the clutch disk off and check it with the input shaft of the trans to make sure there's no binds. Also make sure the trans is parallel to the clutch when installing and try to line up the dowel pins. Have someone slowly rotate the crank to help lines up the splines.
