I just bought a 91 TSI AWD and am having problems getting the car into gear when its running. When not running it slides into gear no problem. When i push in the clutch, the engine shudders a bit and the rpms drop. When i try to push the shifter into gear, it grinds. I bled the clutch line from the slave cylinder, but this didnt change it at all. Im thinking it could be the throw out bearing, but am not completely sure. Also, the hydraulic line that runs to the slave cylinder is not in its bracket. Could this be the problem? Or is it the throw out bearing or some other component?

i had this same problem with my current laser turbo. While I was bleeding the clutch (thought that it was the problem) i noticed while my buddy was pushing the clutch in the whole tranny moved a little bit. Turned out that i somehow broke the belhousing bolt by the front motor mount.

I also had another problem like yours, turned out that the little collar that the throw out bearing sits on that is part of the belhousing was completely sheared off.

long story short your clutch isnt completey disengageing. Could a number things. Try seeing if your getting full travel of the clutch fork.

Well it could be the throw out bearing, but remember this rule of thumb: If you can shift into gears no problem when the car is off, its the CLUTCH. When you CAN'T shift into gears no problem when the car is off, its the TRANNY.

You would only need to bleed the clutch if the line doesn't have pressure, which would cause you to not be able to physically move the sifter from gear to gear, it wouldn't grind, just not go into gear.So it would seem to me that, your clutch is going. Grinding is a common symptom of a clutch on its way out.
