i was wondering if you could pass smog with dsmlink installed on the ecu. the only reason i ask is because i know dsmlink has a feature were you can turn the check engine light off if you are throwing a code, but if you turn it off through dsmlink, will the obd1 reader they have at the smog station pick the code up?
thanks for any help

Yea I believe there is a feature to have the obd port ready. If you have a dsmlink forum account I advise you ask there. I didn't know they had an OBD1 readiness test? I thought it was just for OBDII, and i never really worried because I have a 95 and am exempt to it.

as long as your fuel trims are correct and you ck eng light will function read that "turns on"
when your car is started and then turns off. you will be OK.

now all you have to worry about is a visual inspectionROFL

Make sure you are not in "dsmlink" mode when getting checked. This is accomplished by disconnecting your obd port from the program, turning the key fully off for about 5-10 seconds. Turn it back on and it will be back in stock mode. Make sure all your fuel trims are in spec, and your emissions should be ok.

So after you exit DSMlink mode and are back in OBD1 mode the DTCs you turned off will stay off? I'm interested in how this works too. I have a 2g OBD2 but one of the main reasons I bought DSMlink is the 95 ECU doesn't have the OBD2 problems the later years have with non-continuous readiness monitors. I don't have any CELs but I'd like to know for sure about how the DTC disable feature works.

As far as I can remember, If the car was a new model year in 95 then it came with obd2 certified, it was certified as obd2 so all the stuff was in the ecm for readiness, evap monitors and what not. But obd2 was not mandated in 95, so it was in the 95 new model year cars but was not tested as a obd2 car.
Give me obd1(it's like a child, you can mould it how you want)

After you have cleared all your DTCs and correctly logged out of "dsmlink mode", you should be in the clear.
I have had my cat back removed with rear o2 sitting there for the longest time and still have not thrown a DTC.

I just passed smog today. I have a 98 Talon AWD with a 95 EPROM ECU. Mods are

DSMLINK
FIC 650 cc/min
VR4 180 LPH fuel pump (hard wired)
RS*R 3 inch downpipe with 3 inch magnaflow cat from RRE
RS*R 3 inch cat back
small 16G
JRC FMIC
Blitz BOV recirculated
Homemade MBC set at 18 psi

I just painted everything black. It looks stock that way.

Since you live in CA near Los Angeles it must have been an OBD2 test and not the tailpipe sniffer?

The test included OBDII testing as well as tailpipe sniffer test. Since I'm AWD, I didn't have to do a dyno. Just an idle sniffer then 2500 rpm sniffer.

That is awesome. I won't have to do any sniffer tests but I have been unable to pass the OBD2 test for the past 3 years because I can't satisfy the readiness monitor drive cycles with a 97 ECU. I've paid Mitsubishi enough money to make me sick so they can set the monitors using the MUT-II and get a passing test. I'm putting DSMlink in this weekend. I'll be tempted to cruise through the service driveway just to flip them the bird :p

Budget90GST, can you post your current settings when passing. What was your deadtime and global set at? also did you mess with the airflow settings? Did you change anything in the rpm range where they test? 2000-3500rpm I forget? Or was the deadtime and global good enough where you could just leave the lower rpms at 0.

FIC 650's with 180 LPH FP and factory regulator
Global is at -30 (-31 recommended)
Deadtime is at 330 (330 recommended)
Airflow untouched (my MAF is not hacked)

All sliders for timing and WOT fuel is zeroed out.:D

do you have the smog sheet showing what your values are and max, I'm surprised at teh deadtime. I have denso 660s which suppose to actually flow more then that, and default deadtime for these are 180-190.

Here's the default settings in DSMlink for various injectors:

idle test - 850 rpm

%CO max 1.00 meas .01
%HC max 100 meas 36

2500 rpm test

%CO max 1.00 meas .10
%HC max 100 meas 36

as long as you are using the right settings for injectors, and you run a cat, you will pass sniffer.

all you have to do before hand is do the open port thingie i believe, then unplug the obd port, then restart the car and pull up to the dyno(if applicable). they have to hook up their computers to the obd port anyways, so you couldnt be in dsmlink mode if you wanted to.

wow, this gives a lot of people in cali hope. looks like you had a lot of room for error.

I'm just nervous because next year will be my first year smogging with DSMLink, looks like it will be easier.

I passed with all the mods in my profile, but I had to remove my denso 660s and put stock injectors back, and 0 out afc. I tried to pass with the 660s and tune via safc, but damn that was not working. Thank goodness for DSMLink. This thread has raised my moral.

This was my first smog too. Just keep your trims inline and everyting should be good. Goodluck.
