Can you drive a GST without a turbo?

Is there anyway to "Bypass" using a turbo in my eclipse GST - My turbo recently went out and it can't be rebuilt. I don't want to pay the expense to fix it right now so I was wondering if it's necessary to drive with a turbo in a 1997 Eclipse GST.

Have you been driving it with a bad turbo , or have you drove it with the bad turbo since you've found out it was bad ?

There isnt really and simple, easy way if that is what your asking. Even if you blocked of the oil and water lines, it could overheat and cause catastrophic damage. Used t-25 turbos are a dime a dozen, I happen to have one chilling in my garage. Your out a ride for a little bit bud, sorry! :|

The mechanic told me the that oil was leaking into the turbo - My exhaust was blowing whitish bluish smoke like crazy!

Dont want to pay the expense to fix it right now.. Hmmm. Better get out of this game right now if thats the case. You're in for a world of hurting. Go to a junk yard, find a used turbo off a dsm. 75 bucks you'll be back on your way.

I've looked around there's like no DSM's out here in any junkyards in my area. Willing to buy one online if someone can point me in the right direction. :)

I swapped a NA manifold on my turbo car once, years ago, because my turbo went out (was in highschool with no money to fix it) It was a 6 bolt 1ga and ran like a slug after but if it is a absolute must, it can be done for a short time.

You could take a 1g N/A manifold but that requires modification of the downpipe. The header would feed straight down instead of where with a turbo it would feed to the side into the O2 housing then down. You could find a used turbo locally if you have any luck. Personally, I would disconnect the WG and limp it as is till you can afford a new one.

Just know that if it's leaking coolant, it's going to kill your O2 sensor. Had that happen to me. I would disconnect the coolant lines from the turbo and loop them together with some teflon reinforced rubber hose found at the auto parts store. It's one less headache to deal with when you go to replace the turbo.

I'm sure someone will sell you a good used t-25 (if that's what's on your car) for $50 just to get it out of the way. Turbo swapping is very easy if you have even a little expriance with tools.

By the time you get new parts to make it n/a it will cost you more money

Yes you can, I've don't it a long time ago to get by for a few days . Plug/block/remove the oil and coolant lines, take the center section out of the turbo and bolt a piece of steel over the side of the turbine housing were the center section bolts to and reinstall just the exhaust housing, then connect your maf and air filter to your lower intercooler pipe . Will it work..yes is it worth it ...no unless its your only way of transportation .

Ok, so there has been lots of advice. honestly the best I have seen for a temporary solution is wiring the waste gate completely open and not giving it a ton of load or WOT. This will not really help your oil issue though, that will sill leak into the system. if you can wire the WE open and plug the oil lines, then your talking. You should be able to find some caps online here somewhere to just disconnect the lines and cap them. Just my 2 cents

Wire open the WG. This disables the turbo. Just don't do any WOTS for now.

^ +1

Although it doesn't really "disable" the turbo, it prevents it from boosting above 0 psi. If your turbo is really really really shot, just spooling up to 0 psi can result in oil blow by and you risk grenading the turbo, sending metal fragments into your intake, which last time I checked, isn't a good thing ;)

Running these cars with 0 boost is actually pretty funny. you will be surprised how slow you are.

^^ Beat me to it. OP thats what you need, make an offer on it and get it installed. You'll be up n runnin in no time. I have one as well but its buried in my shed at the moment.

Oil getting past the seals is going to be more a function of oil pressure.. which is tied to engine speed. Granted boost with a poor PCV system will exacerbate the issue.

I'm not saying you don't need a rebuild or a replacement turbo, but to keep your boost as well as RPM down in the mean time.

This is great advice for all of us but I'm guessing the OP isn't very mechanically inclined, afterall he had to have a mechanic tell him his turbo was bad and he is asking if he can run without a turbo. Your best bet is going to be spending a few hours researching on the forums to find out if you are confident enough to undertake a turbo swap.

If you were willing to spend a touch more for an upgrade, there are a few 14b turbos on here that are for sale at around $125. The upside being that you have room to grow power wise. Theres a thread dedicated to 14b turbos and getting the most power out of them so when the time comes you can put the power down and have resources on here for advice on what to do.

I do realize that you only need a turbo just to drive the thing but I figure you might as well upgrade so you can have more fun down the road. :)
