I was driving from a friends house yesterday and I was in the mood for a bit of spirited driving. from 4th I downshifted to third and took off. I got up to about 95 then I slowed down to make a turn. The turn was to the left. I got up to 3rd again and I got a weird feeling something was wrong.....I began to hear a rattle like noise from either the left side of the car and or the rear. My friend heard the noise in a car behind me. I was coasting areund 30 mph and the car shut down. I got it off the main road. The car didn't overheat. No cel either. The car truns over like it wants to start but it wont.No banging or loud clanking from the engine. I have had a harder and harder time starting the car recently. The car hesitates around 2k rpm....when it was running.

Anyone have any Ideas?

How was your RPMs was it redline or near when you down shift?
You could have over redline and bent some valves.

Timing belt could skip a tooth?

Bad Starter?

Rattle...umm thats a hard one something like this could had happen your alternator belt could had snap some time and its making rattle sounds and since your battery is not getting charge the car cut off? But rattle could be just rocks in your fender or alot of things...

Hesitates at 2k RPM. PCV could be bad.

Well I'm not sure still a newbie. But thats my 2 cents hope it works and good luck.

Take care,

Joseph

How was your idle before it happened? Did you notice any lack of spark? I'm leaning towards your coil pack. But I don't know about the rattling.. Maybe something that was rattling the whole time and you just heard it when the car shut off?

I checked ignition. I had someone crank the car while a had a plug wire going to a spare plug on th valve cover. I saw no spark for any of the 4 clys. I guess its time to check coil and transistor....

if you did not ground the spark plug than you will not see a spark. try again by sticking a screwdriver in the plug wire and grounding it onto the engine.

If your DSM just cranks over, than that means you have a fuel problem. Either no spark, or no fuel getting into the cylinder. Since you have had a hard time starting, I would suggest checking all power and ground connections, and all new plugs and wires. Good luck with your car.

I checked the transistor. it's fine. I checked the primary resistance of the coil. it's fine.....but when I check the secondary resistance of the coil i don't get anything......think it makes sense....i think it does.

Most likely crank walk. What happens is the crank has too much end play and takes out the CAS when it moves inside the block. Without the CAS the car won't start or run. Have someone press the clutch and watch the crank pulley. If I'm correct then you'll be able to see some lateral movement of the pulley. I hope I'm wrong but at least now you can build that 6 bolt you've always wanted. Good luck and let us know what you find --Jon

also keep in mind that in 99% of cases a crankwalked/walking motor is driveable for a very long period of time, showing early symptoms progressively getting worse.

Sorry about that. It is unlikely that a bs belt snap would take out the crank angle sensor. Take a look at JDM 6 bolts. They aren't too expensive and have low miles. Hope everything works out and oh yeah rep points cough cough ;) --Jon

Yep it is still up. If you put a sensor in it will be destroyed the same way your last one was. You should be able to see how your last one was broken when you are installing a new one. Looks like either rebuild or engine swap time. Sorry for your bum luck. --Jon

Forget about a rebuild. Your ###### going to need a new block and crank. Might as well just get a 6 bolt. And the swap is very easy. PM if you need any help or got any ?s

Got the car back. The TB was cleaned. Now the car idles at 3k rpm. What do I do now?
BTW where do i go to leave positive rep.
bottom left corner of the post, where it says if the person is online or offline, there is a little scale, you click on that. how many miles were on your motor?
