can i put a 1g awd tranny in 2g car?

ok for starters i blew up my transmission last night, not sure exactly how but i did. i have been searching everywhere for a 2g AWD tranny and i can't find one, however i see 1g AWD tranny's everywhere. so the bottom line question is can i put one in my car or do i have to find the 2g awd tranny? i have a 97 gsx.


im sure people will ask so:
i was driving on the highway and i got off an exit and when approaching a turn i downshifted into 3rd, this put me at about 4k rpm halfway thru the turn i had accelerated to 6k and i was about to put it in 4th and i heard a loud pop and the car was just free rolling. now it is very hard to get into any gear (nearly impossible) and once i do its even harder to get it out....any idea what happened?

same thing happened to mine but going into 3rd......I would have to shut the car off and put it in second...first gear was to low and I didnt want to rev the engine too much so in 2nd and I drove it home, "I'd rather put it a new clutch than a new engine"....I took the tranny out and popped it open since I knew it was dead...what I found was that the fork that puts it in third broke and got caught on the 2nd gear fork. I ended up getting a cheap autozone clutch and a used $200 tranny...luckly enough it had a rebuilt tag on it and there where no grinds...Good luck finding one....I dont think you can put that 1g tranny on the 2g because of splines or clutch issues...I dont remember but I asked the same thing when that happened.

ok, very good reason as to why i can't use the 1g tranny...now ivesearched this site up and down with no luck as to finding a tranny, does anybody know of any other websites that i could find a trany on? or perhaps anybody in the boston area that is selling one?

Sure you can if you have a welder. I've been driving around on mine since august with absolutely no problems. I've even tought two people to drive a stick in the car so far, if anything would have broke the welds it would have been all the times they continually downshifted instead of upshifted. I used the parts that I had did some simple before and after measurments to position the engine in the correct spot (its not rocket science) and I was done.

Keep searching for a 2g tranny. Look for part outs. You'll find the transmission you're looking for, if you put the time in to look for it.
