i have a 7 bolt engine in a 97 gsx...i was just wondering how hard is it to time the engine after i put the new cams in and how long would the job take more or less...installing 1g cams...

The cams are easy to install. 1 Hour to 2 hours depending on your mechanic skills.
this write up may help. AS far as 1g cams theres not much different except the duration of the lobe is slightly more. And if you do install the 1g cams just make sure you torque the cam caps to spec and in torque order (center out)

Timing Belt VFAQ

Might as well change cam seals, and inspect the valvetrain. I wouldn't waste the effort to do this for 1g cams, 264/272 combo would be worth the effort. I did the same thing you did and I was mad when I had to do it all over again because i finally saved up the money to buy used HKS 264/272s, then I went 272/272 HKS and now BC 280s. Please watch those timing marks, that exhaust cam likes to walk from the cam ramp.

For the little power you will pick up/ even notice it's not worth running 1g cams, Deff save your money and get bigger longer duration cams you'll be happy and won't have to do this process again.

yeah thnx for the advice guys...i wasnt expecting a big power change with 1g cams...was just guna do ### i had a pair lying around but im save up for all the parts and cams and just sell the cams along with a few other items i have...

would u guyz recommend 264/272 combo or a pair of 272s?

If you already have a fairly new timing belt, you can use a tensioner tool (long bolt) to compress the tensioner, then you don't even have to mess with the timing belt stuff, just zip tie the belt to the gears and slide the gears off the cams.

If you do pull it all apart, mark the timing belt and transfer the marks to the new belt, then you can just put it on the marks and you're done.
