Resolved Camshaft Bearing Cap (or Tower) Bolts

Anyone know where I can order a set of camshaft cap (or tower) bolts for my 420a? These ####ers snapped when torquing them down. Am I gonna have to check out a Mitsu or Chrysler dealership too look for these. I would rather just order them online. I need to get this project moving, any help would be greatly appreciated, this is setting me back now.

I see that you have a 4G63 powered DSM, so be mindful of where you're posting... the OP has a 420A.

OP, barring ARP studs, you'll probably have to go to the dealer for the stock bolts. They aren't too expensive.

Did you torque them with a good torque wrench? Sound like you over tightened them.

STM isn't known for its inventory of 420A parts... hence my warning.

Was torquing them down 9 ft pounds and they snapped. Was guessing they would considering how heated they get, especially If the motor just hit 100,000 miles

Neither here nor there at this point, but I have never had one break (which doesn't mean it can't happen). Actually, what usually happens is that the hole will strip out LONG before you break any bolts. The small aluminum hole is just not strong enough to hold up to the force of those tightening them down with air , I have helicoiled so many of those from used heads, that I buy my helicoils for that hole in bulk

I'm guessing that something else happened to that bolt before you went to tighten it down.

Maaaaaan, they went in fine though, didnt crossthread or anything. The first two snapped and I didn't bother doing the rest, was following procedure as per alldata. I don't see why they would snap, as these should be reusable.....right? . Using a 3/8 torque wrench with reducer, maybe I should buy a quarter inch torque wrench try that instead to be on the safe side?

Most of the time use a 1/4" torque wrench for anything M8 and smaller, but yes use a 1/4" TW, and just convert inch to ft lbs.

Mine snapped too. I was using a 3/8 tw with a reducer when mine snapped. I just went to ACE hardware and got a few grade 8 flared bolts. They worked perfect... Might be a little....ghetto or wrong. But Ive put at least 30k on the Ace bolts and the car is still running perfect.

I've snapped a couple myself from my first head. Had a spare so used some from there then. Last time head was torn down I broke another and had no spares. But just used one from the big nuts/bolts box you can buy a Pepboys and it has worked fine.

Used a quarter inch torque wrench to finish the job, was perfect. For future reference, anyone can order these from your Mitsubishi dealership. Thanks for all help guys, much appreciated.

I called up the parts depot at my local mitsu dealership asking about camshaft cap bolts. Looked em up, they will ask which ones narrowing it down by quantity, as an example they will state there are 18 smaller bolts (mainly inside cap bolts), x amount on the outside (size given) and x amount other (can't remember how many but you get the idea ).

I guess they pull up photos showing the placements and quantities. I cannot remember how much they were individually but was told a full set of 18 for the insides were around $44.00 I think. I only ended up getting 2 that I snapped from a friend who pulled a head from a junkyard, so I'm good with that, it would've been best to get a new set but I needed the project to move forward without any set backs.
