ok so ive been having a terrible sputter/ losing power problem like completely no power when climbing a hill. started off replacing fuel filter because it had what looked like sand in it fixed it for a day and clogged up replaced it with another filter and a new pump didnt fix it for long like a day and it started happening again. so i think i have a bunch of crap in my tank or something. first i check the filter and it was clean. so i decide to drain the tank too see if there was any discoloration or cloudiness and the gas was crystal clear.:banghead: im was at a loss. didnt know what to do. so i start thinking every time i messed with any thing i disconnected my battery which resets my ecu. so maby it is my ecu sending messed up signals so i pull it out and there is defenetly a bad leaking cap lots of corrosion.

by the way i have an auto that swapped all my old 5 speed stuff into, ecu, afpr, 450cc injectors, wally 255.

any ways back to it i put my cail emissions auto ecu back in and now it runs a lot better. still has a slight loss of power and sputter but not nearly as bad as it was. and i figure thats from the fuel trims being messed up becouse of the 450cc injectors.

so i guess my questions would be how bad is it to run the cali auto ecu on a federal 5 speed engine. i now it will run rich cus of the bigger injectors. also ill post pic of my 5speed ecu. also any suggestions for things to check would be awesome although im pretty sure it was the ecu.

As long as you dont beat on it. Running rich wont hurt as long as its not extremly rich its alright. I think the auto injectors are 390cc. You can also find a good used ecu for a decent price through millerimportparts.com call or text 8284299194

ok so to start off i have a 92 awd tsi auto. i have swapped all the stuff off my 5 speed parts car, injectors, turbo, ecu. also have full three inch exhaust, and a wally 255, afpr and dejon intake. so here's the thing the 5 speed ecu fried and i have to use my cali auto ecu and i have a full egr and vac delete. plus the above mods how bad will it be for me to be driving the car. its my dd. i figure its going run rich because of the 450 injectors. but what about the full egr and vac delete with the cali ecu will that affect any thing. it seems to be driving fine i just dont get on it.

Which Base Fuel Pressure are you running?
The 5 speed version sets a base pressure of ~36 psi, the auto ~43 psi.

Which ECU? The 1992 California Auto AWD would be a MD165532. Adding a 1k resistor at R129 would convert it to the Federal MD165531.

my base pressure is set to 36psi because i have 450 cc injectors. i have the stock ecu in it. its MD165532. the one that fried is md166262. ill post a pic of it. so i take it that it is not much of a deference between the ecu's. the cars running fine. i just wanted to know how bad it would be to drive it. its my daily and i wont have the funds to replace it for a little while. i could see if my friend i sold my old injectors too would let me use them temporarily since they are just laying around right now.

Capacitors leaked, electrolyte wicked under the conformal coating, corroded the copper and solder. Fixable but would have been cheaper to do before it got eaten up.

There are timing and fuel map differences between the 5speed and automatic ECU but the injector size difference are less than 10%. The 450cc injectors at 36psi really flow about 411cc and the 390 cc injectors are about 390cc using the auto FPR. The Auto ECU knows how to deal with the idle speed in part/neutral vs drive so I like to start with their code and add the 5 speed maps rather than rewrite the 5 speed code to do all the auto stuff.

Lets see the auto ECU too. You don't want it rotting away when you could change the caps for a few bucks and avoid the damage.

ok thank you steve so its really not that big of a difference. i was more worried about the egr delete with the cali ecu. i can go take out the auto ecu and take some pics of it. lucky i hadnt sold my auto ecu yet. the five speed ecu is out of my parts car so no money lost and neither are eproms. i need one of those before i can buy link anyways right.
