Seeing i still have a long ways before i decide to upgrade my turbo.. i was just thinking about buying piece for piece and building it up myself. i was thinking like a T3/T4. i think i know what all i need but im not 100%. So i was wondering if anyone knows all the parts i need. Id be greatful if someone could let me know. im looking forward to it and it will be alittle project to do while i work on getting the car ready. Is there any advantages/disadvantages to doing this?

You may as well buy a pre-built one your not going to save any money really.

the reason im gonna build it from parts is becuz of a money issue. plus it was just seem like something to do it learn more about them.

So you are looking to buy all the "guts" that go into a turbo and assemble it yourself? Or are you looking to put together your own turbo kit?

I still don't understand. You have the ability to balance a turbo? What pieces are you talking about?

I'm in the middle of a turbo build-up myself but I am not sure if that was a good idea. Although at first, it seemed a good one!

I bought a new TD06-17C mitsu turbo for $250 two months ago with the intention of stuffing a 20g wheel inside and then be done with it. But $180 for a wheel from FP was too much for me.

Then I bought a T04E 57-trim comp. wheel for $45 on Ebay thinking that was a good move. But that's too big for my 17C comp. cover (even bored to the max!):(

So I need another comp. cover. I can have a new T04E .60 A/R cover for $80 and fit that to my TD06 with an adapter plate from FP that retails for $75. ($155 total)

$155 + $45 (57-trim) = $200 I should have bought the 20g wheel in the first place!

Plus, I have to add about $500 canadian in labor for the modifications at the turbo shop.

A 20g turbo retails for about $1800 can here in Québec, so maybe at the end I'll save a couple bucks for a turbo with more HP potential.

If you have any suggestions about my build-up, throw me your ideas!!

compressor housing
compressor wheel
center cartridge
trust bearing
journal or ball bearings
turbine housing
turbine wheel
a couple different sized ring clips
band clamp for the turbine housing
the plate that goes behind the compressor wheel
a couple of different sized rubber o-rings
a turbo balancer machine $$$$$$$$

im sure there a a couple things that i missed but it all adds up to alot of $$$.

A turbo balancing machine... one thing is sure, I don't have that!:D

But the 17C turbo I bought for the project is NEW and COMPLETE, meaning that I have the comp. housing, comp. wheel, center cartridge, bearing, exhaust housing clamp, turbine heat shield, turbine wheel (a td06 by the way). The one thing missing is the exhaust housing, but a 7cm2 or even a 6cm2 DSM exhaust housing will just simply bolt in after a little boring (to clear the larger td06 turbine).

The thing that makes me worry is how much it's gonna cost me to fit the larger T04E 57-trim wheel in it and how long it's gonna last on the stock thrust bearing?

Only way to tell is to ship the turbo to the turbo shop. I already called and they said it could be done but didn't quote me a price since they need to have the turbo in their hands to give me the exact cost.
