I just picked up a USDM used engine with approx. 130-150k miles on it with no warranty. When i took it apart, there were some pulley wear marks on the timing belt cover, looks like they replaced or had some head work done in the past cause of the markings left on the head behind the cam gears.
I'm on a extremely slim budget but wanna get the "longblock" refreshed. So far my parts list consist of:
Jackson Auto machine ->
-Upgraded Valve Springs
-New OEM Valves
-Premium Valve seals
-ARP Head stud kit.
Still need to get the retainers or do i?
The block is kinda in the works...Have most of it disassembeled. I purchased the Balance shaft removal kit and will attempt to remove them tonight.
I also bought a set of new con-rod and main bearings.
I want to purchase these items to freshen up the block a bit->
-Cosmetic Head gasket
-OEM Timing Belt
-New Idler and Tensioner Pulleys
-New Tensioner
-New Freeze Plugs
-New Piston Rings
Reuse pistons and rods<-
My question is, if i'm building a block close to OEM specs and run a max of 14psi as a daily driver would i have to get new pistons and rods? Honestly i just want the thing to run without burning oil or blowing smoke, since i have no warranty.
Mind you that the car has been sitting for an unfortunate 8 months now and all out of money.
I was thinking of having the machine shop hot tank, deck and hone the block for me, save money and do the reassembly on my own. Most of the shops i've been in contact with want approx. $1500-$2000 to hot tank, deck, bore .020", hone and reassembly.
If i knew that "Refreshing" a block was gonna cost that much i would have bought a stroked block or a rebuilt engine for about the same price. In total with the parts i do have and the engine i've already spent almost $2k on a used long block, clutch , flywheel, gaskets, manifold, etc...but only bought the car for $300!
