broken flywheel bolts

so I had my transmission bellhousing break in half got a new tranny started working on it last night and I saw that all the flywheel bolts snapped and they are flush with the crank where they mount. I am going to try to use an easy out but if that fails what would be the best course of action? helicoil or retap to the next size?
also if I do get them out successfully what is the OEM size for them?

Your going to have a hard time trying to drill the bolts unless you have a carbide bit. If you get lucky and someone forgot to use thread locker you could try spinning them out with a hammer and a center punch. My favorite way to remove broken bolts is to take a slightly smaller nut end weld it to the broken bolt.
 
Drill them out if possible but anything is if you work hard enough or pay to have things done, but might be easier to get another crank. But that's just me we all have ways of doing things.
 
Being those are torqued to around 100 ft/lbs and may have thread lock on them, an easy out probably isn't going to do it and if it breaks, which it likely will you'll be in more trouble. I would say a used crank would the most cost effective option, but I'm assuming the engine is still in the car, you can try and drill them out. Take extra caution though, make sure you're drilling completely true to the bolt. I personally wouldn't helicoil something like that.
 
Doesn't hurt to test it but I'd try the easy out method. With the head gone, they're not torqued down to 100Ft*lbs anymore and they shouldn't be bottomed out so most likely the only thing holding them in now is loctite. For that, I'd try a torch and heat the bolt shank up to soften or, if possible, burn the loctite. After that it should be smooth sailing. You'll definitely need a cobalt drill bit to drill into those bolts though. It'll take two drill sessions per bolt. One for the pilot and one for the easy out size. Get a pack of ten on ebay for each.
 
ya it was a disappointment got the transfer case off last night and through the broken bell housing i could see all of them were snapped killed my motivation; If I cant get them out I will probably just pull the motor and put my other motor in it but it's still in my parts car and it's not warm here in idaho I will try to torch em and see if they budge

just an update took the transmission out (actually warmed up to 40 degrees today) the flywheel bolts did not have anti-seize on them got 4 of them out with my fingers and the last two with the easy out and just like the name they came out easy! just waiting on my new flywheel bolts to come in the mail and the new tranny goes in, looks like i got lucky.
 
Nice. glad you got them out. I HATE dealing with broken striped bolts. Takes the wind right out your sails LOL
