Brakes- Has this ever happened to you?

Ok, just bought a 91 eclipse 5 speed awd about 2 weeks ago. When i bought it there was a rubbing/scraping sound coming from the rear passenger side wheel. I figured it just needed the brakes done. I had to wait for my next pay check to do them but last night when I went to back the car into the driveway it was almost like my e brake was locked. I took the wheel off, i think the ebrake cable is fine(its fairly loose), but i noticed something between the rotor and the dust shield. I got it out and its a piece of metal about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick(in the shape of a brake pad). I know some brake pads use metal strips to let you know when to change the pads but this looks like the entire pad itself . If it is the pad and i was driving around with it like that for a couple weeks is my caliper screwed? Also the rotor that is on there now is warped as hell so I was planning on changing that with the pads. Anyone got any advice as to how i can tell if i need a new caliper too?

Well if it's in the shape of the pad, then your pad was well beyond worn. Replace the pads on both rear wheels, check to see how much pad is left on the front wheels. If it's worn down that far, turning the rear rotors will be necessary, but depending on how bad the rotors were gouged, don't be surprised if whoever does it tells you that you'll need new rotors. They can only be turned so much before you thin them so much that they crack.

The caliper should be fine, unless you're unable to push the piston back into the caliper when you change the pads. If you can't push the piston back, then you have a frozen caliper, but from what it sounds like in your situation, the previous owner just never changed the rear pads.

rotors are around 20 odd bucks apiece now.
getting them turned is like 12$ per rotor?

plus the labor charge.

Yes, it's screwed.

However -if you promise not to tell anyone- you can put new pads on that eaten-up disc, and it'll work just fine. It won't pull, it won't eat up the pad, it'll just work like the brake on the other side.

But of course no one would ever do such a thing.

Remember when retracting the rear caliper pistons on the 1G, you need to screw them in, not push them in. Pushing them in will damage your caliper.

I did this and it ate the pad, and skreached a lot.
