Hi,

I am not a newbie as I have been a member of this forum for years. I had forgoten my password, and the system wont send it to me. But alas, I will start over.

Anyway,

Recently bought a Talon on ebay. This is my 6th one(DSM) and 4th one off ebay. This particular one is a 96 Tsi Awd Auto with 92k. Besides the incredible amount of rust(Which the seller lied about) there seems to be a Whirring sound coming from the area of the rear. The only other way I can describe it, is that it sounds like a howling fuel pump, but from the outside seemingly from the right hand side. The sound starts at around 35mph and increases in noise as speed increases. However, once I hit 65 the noise seems to dissapate and a new problem begins....The car begins to bounce and vibrate. Its not tremendously bad, but bad enough to worry me. The gas pedal begins to vibrate very rapidly, and the steering wheel shakes back and forth a tiny bit as well as vibrate, and you can see the passenger seat shaking. It kinda feels like something is binding and being forced to move. The thing I cant figure out, is that it wont always do it. It will usually start after about a mile of driving on the freeway, and will do it for about 3-5 miles, and then will stop. It didnt do it at all on my way to work in the morning, but thats not to say it wont do it again. Any help on that matter is appreciated.

Secondly, I cant beleive the gas mileage I am getting. Thus far, I have gone almost half tank, and have only gone about 100 miles. I have yet to give her full boost, with only more than half boost a couple of times. I keep the rpms low, and dont romp all over the place. I figured perhaps an open filter would help, and obviously a tune up, but is there any tricks or secrets that you guys use that could help. I did some searching on here and it seems that the average gas mileage is all over the place.

And lastly, my steering seems to be odd. The problem is when I turn. For example, say I am going straight and the steering wheel is straight. I then turn left or right and the steering is smooth as power steering should be, but when I proceed to turn the steering wheel back straight, it becomes hard to turn the wheel back straight. It feels as if the wheels want to stay turned as if they are stuck. It doesnt take a tremendous amount of force to turn the wheel, but certainly more than what should be required with a car with power steering. There are no whining noises during any of this that to me would indicate low fluid...

Sorry for the long post. Any help is appreciated.

The vibration sounds like a tire starting to seperate or fail, try rotating the tires first and hope that it moves the sound otherwise if it's an AWD car it probably in the differential.

The bad gas mileage is probably EGR related, you can take it off and try to clean it. Use rubbing alchol and remove all of the carbon build up. If you can get it un plugged it should reduce your fuel consumption.

Okay,

Thanks for the EGR info. I filed a formal complaint with ebay and we will see what happens. I stopped driving the car. With the poor gas mileage and the vibration, I cant stand to drive it. Anyone have any thoughts on the turning issue?

Rear sound could be bearing, rotor grinding, brake, low fluid in your rear diff.

The low mileage could be an o2 sensor going bad or a need for a tune up.

The third thing sounds like a power steering issue.
