Getting the cams lined up at proper angle was a little tricky also. Here are the other timing marks. The crank timing mark is a little funny. I put a red box to show there's a little "u" that lines up w/ that mark. There are no balance shafts on this motor.

i would set the timing and try to fire it up before going through all the troubleof removing the head. my car was at a shop getting a water pump. the clown calling himself a mechanic didn't adjust the tensioner and the timing jumped after the engine was on for like 2 minutes. they redid it againa nd the owner assured me he checked it himself. the car ran fine so it was on time but the tensioner wasn't adjusted again and it jumped time 2 blocks from the shop. i never took the car back i did the timing myself, properly this time and the car has been running like a champ since. it was about a tooth to 2 teeth off but it didn't bend a valve. the engine also would start this way but would not idle and would have very little power. this is probably what happened to this car and a timing job may fix it. hey if it works you saved yourself a head job. if it doesn't you got some practice at setting a timing belt in a DSM. you also don't need any special tools if your a little creative. i do the timing with a 17mm 14mm, 12mm a couple of clamps or "oversized clothes pins as my friends calls them" to hold the belt on the cams and a couple of flat head screw drivers for the tensioner pully and the tensioner arm assembley.

the valves could have not been bent before that. Just out of time. that was the last thing you should have done you could have just bent them...

The timing marks are suppose to line up, yours being out 1/2 tooth will effect the timing.

It's not possible to be 'off' 1/2 a tooth. You can only move the timing belt 1 tooth, not 1/2 obviously. It can be off a little due to stretch of the timing belt.

You need a straight edge across all 4 cam timing marks as someone stated on the first page. The pic you posted doesn't prove whether the timing is right or wrong.

Like jrohner said you never showed in your pics that it was off...I've always been one not to assume anything with out seeing it myself not that your wrong it's just IF the valve were not they Would be NOW we'll leave it at that for future reference

I prefer to take the valve cover off and use the top surface of the head with some kind of strait edge that will fit between the cam gears with-out interfering with them

He did post another pic (he said the crank was at TDC) that showed the exhaust cam at what looked like approx 10oclock and the intake and 2oclock but its bad pic quality so I could be wrong.

yeah i did another check at TDC and it was way off and way hard to get a good pic of it with it in the car. and im removing the head just to make sure i almost have it off anyways i just need to go get another 10mm hex head and take the head itself off

Ok What I was trying to say really is he didn't post the pictures together showing were the marks where

in this pic you can see the marks are almost lined up but you can't see the dowel pins

with the second it's obviously 180 out

The problem I have is that it look like the motor has been turn over between the pictures
& He posted them separately. if you put the first and last pic together it almost looks like if you turn the crank back a tad that it would be in time right but then again you can't see the dowl marks

And with the second picture if that IS at TDC How did it get set 180 out ???

the engine gets hard to turn at those places due to engine compression not valves hitting the head. try to turn the engine with the spark plugs removed. i always do the 6 manual revolutions after a timing belt with the spark plugs in and i cuss at the damn car the whole time when i reach the compression strokes on the rotations. i'm not saying your wrong but it could be ok. i have to use a large ratchet and it still is abitch to turn when it hits compression.
now you have the belt off though so its up to you if you want to try this

plug one was out when i was checking there was a screwdriver in the whole. anyways enough of your arguments the t-belt is off and every gasket will be replaced in the top end along with valves ### unlike you haters i know they are bent ive turned over v-8's by hand that didnt give me that much trouble

ok so after finding a tool that wouldnt break to get the head off i found this... ill let the pics do the talking the pics of the valve groups are in order from 1 to 4
