So I took my car out tonight for a cruise, wasn't driving it any different than i normally do, did a 2nd, 3rd, half way through 4th pull and it was just fine. About another 3 miles down the road i stopped at a stop sign and went to take off again and the turbo is producing 0psi? So i finish driving home and when i get there i took the intake tube off the turbo and sure enough there is tons of shaftplay and you can see where the compressor wheel had hit the side of the housing. I've put maybe 500 miles on this turbo, I did buy it used but it was like new when i got it. When it blew there was no smoke, and it still doesn't smoke. It acts like it had been starved of oil, but i don't know how that would be possible, as i have the feed running off the oil filter housing. This is the 3rd turbo that has blown up on this car (the first 2 were for different reasons), and i'm getting sick of buyin them, i just don't understand what could have happened? I'm only running 20lbs of boost, and the turbo is a 60-1. To be honest i don't know what brand the turbo is, it has a mitsu intake housing, and a mitsu exhaust housing but the center section doesn't look like a mitsu. Could i just have been sold a junk turbo? or is something else going on, because i really don't wanna put another turbo on and have this happen again :cry:

I bought it from a reputable member of this forum, with plenty of positive feedback. So if anything like that did happen, I got screwed out of my money and that is all there is to it.

The first two turbos were an FP green and a 14b that blew because of the wrong head studs in the car and they were getting starved of oil. I bought a new turbo, moved the oil feed, and then this happens. Guess it goes to show that reputation isn't everything if that IS in fact what happened.

Sounds like it was starved for oil or way to much pressure was added to the turbo. I wouldn't go blaming people when something could have possibly ended up in the journal bearings of the turbo. I would pull it apart and take a gander.

But if it was too much pressure wouldn't that blow and smoke like hell?

If you've now killed 3 turbos in a row, it sounds you've got bigger problems than the turbos themselves.

Stop and think that the engine and turbo share the same oil supply. Then think about how an oiling issue that may take a year to kill an engine can kill a turbo in a few hundred miles because of the heat, speed, and loads on the bearings.

Sounds to me like it's time you invest in an inline filter....and check it often. ;)

If you haven't tore down the previous turbo(s) and this one, then you really don't know what happened to them. Don't be afraid- if they're junk, you're not going to hurt anything. Take lots of pics- and post them. :thumb:

well like i said the first 2 turbos were running off the stock oil feed on the head and i didnt realize when we installed ARP headstuds that they were 6bolt studs in an early 7 bolt head causing it to be starved for oil. I then moved the oil feed to the bottom of the oil filter housing, where i checked and it flows plenty of oil. I'm debating on sending in my FP green and having it rebuilt instead of buying a new turbo, or does anyone on here do rebuilds on FP's? it was starved of oil, the center section appears to be ok, its going to need both wheels and new bearings tho.

Def rebuild the green, heard that is a monster turbo with good spool time. It is concerning that you keep blowing them. Check your return line, make sure its something like a -AN10 or something big like that. If not running a BB, you dont need a restrictor(unless pressure is insanely high). Get a good mechanical gauge and test pressure from idle to redline and see what you have going on. An engine is alot more expensive than a 1000 dollar turbo...
