blown Tranny maybe????

I've Got my tranny out right now to change the flywheel and I was wondering how I could go about seeing if my tranny is blown.

The problem is I had to start out in 2nd and the car has to be going so fast before it will go into 3rd but all the other gears are fine. Also before I took it to a shop to have it looked at I could put it in 1st and try and pull start it. They got it to start and then this problem came up. I then a couple days after got it home tried to start it and just grinded, I then took it back to that shop and on the way i couldn't put it in 1st and pull start it, And since they wouldnt work on it when they said they would I am stuck with doing it, but any ways I'm leaning away from the tranny be blown since the problem is showing up after the shop worked on it.

Like your getting towed and you let out the clutch in a gear to turn the motor over

Sounds like the clutch is broken or way out of adjustment if it is stuck in the 'friction zone' like that...
