Hey fellas I woke up this wonderful Christmas Eve morning and fire up the 98 gsx and after a bit of idling I hear this god awful scraping noise coming from my turbo...took off the intake and sure as heck there's about a 1/8"-1/4" of shaft play both laterally and in and out...needless to say the turbo is screwed:/ well I need some options here. I have a build block all forged .020 over and a 1mm oversized head, and 272/272 cams, as for fuel I have a single 255 and 1000cc injectors...what would be a good/ semi cheap turbo that would match up well with my fuel and build? Thanks

I was looking at the HX35-40 but I was shooting for tens before and I want to keep that goal

How many miles on it? What oil you currently running? Whaty boost normally? Any pertinent information related to the turbo failure would be nice.

so its still true PTE makes crap turbo's?
Uh, yah.

they are not rebuildable?
With enough play for the wheel to hit the housing....both wheels are now junk along with all the internals, the seal plate and possibly the center housing as well. Good luck buying a billet HP62 compressor wheel from anyone but PTE...and they don't sell parts to the public.

The only way you could get back on track with that turbo at this point is to buy a new CHRA and whatever ridiculous price it would cost, and then you're stuck with another turbo identical to the one you just had which will be on borrowed time from the moment you start your car for the first time.

Best to start new with a clean slate.

For awhile I wanted to pick up a pte 6262, but with enough research on this forum I think I'll just stick to the holset turbos.

I hear that. I had been looking at the BB 6466 iirc but with the last 2 posts on pte failures im steering clear. I could get an entire hx40 t3 setup for less than the cost of the pte turbo alone. And the hx40 is serviceable. If i would have known PTE sell turbos that essentially can only be serviced by them, i would have never bought the one i have now. I don tlike any company that operates like that.
Still would like to hear how many miles it had on it just so i can start my "clock" haha

I think the failure are in the Journal Bearing turbos by PTE. The hardware in JB PTE turbos are just not designed to handle the thrust loads. The Ball Bearing turbos are another story.

I have no dog in this race, never used a PTE turbo, but this is just knowledge for all BB turbos.

I have heard nothing but bad things about PTE. Even when i called them to ask them feed and drain questions, even though i already knew the answers. They gave me the wrong info and told me to feed from the ofh, well i fed from the head with a .030 restrictor and had no issues. I only didn't follow their advice because my 6152R was used and did not have a warranty. If you have a pte turbo and it's under warranty, you have no choice but to listen and take PTE's stupidity so if and when it does blow, you get a free replacement. (if they dont make excuses and play the blame game). Their staff know virtually nothing about their own products.

I sold my dbb scm6152 because i was paranoid from all the bad reviews. The bb units are alot better quality and i did not have a single issue with the 6152R, however i did make the switch to the dark side! (Hx40) :sneaky: and i love this turbo so much more.
