Hey Gents. i have looked around this site before, but this will be my first post.
last week, i blew a connecting rod in my 98 Talon Tsi FWD.

the rest of the car is in almost stock condition, my mechanic advised me to junk the car since the engine is blown..... i laughed at him, and decided to find a new mechanic.

i need your advised on weather i should have the engine rebuilt, or replaced. and if rebuilt, what mods should i have done to it, if any.

i can chance my oil, wheels, and break pads, but this is beyond my area of car knowledge, any advise would be helpful. thanx.

Hey, this is Joe at Strictly Import Motorsports, feel free to call us at 269-350-9055 on questions you may have. We would be glad to help you!

Your best bet would be to get a new engine. Since you threw a rod, who knows what might have broke or cracked on the block or head.

dont call them!

ROFL!!!!!

Seriously, if it were me and i were to go threw this whole shit storm again of rebuilding an engine i would personally go all out balls to the wall. Go with a 2.3L kit, oversized valves, springs etc on the head. Forged rods/pistons. ARP hardware. I think jacks has a 2.3L they sell outright for less than 3grand. But i could go on and on. It will take a machinist to tell you if your block is even worth boring and what condition the crank is in and other critical things. GL and just read and read. Just click on members cars and look at mods lists and search the forum, youll find out where you want to go with this.

my old mechanic had my car in his shop about 2 months for a wheel bearing swap. and he was supposed to change my oil aswell.

according to the new mechanic i have taken the car to. he doesnt want to even touch a rebuild. because there was no oil in the engine at all. which makes me think that no matter what broke first, there is going to be more damage than just replacing a connecting rod will fix.
new mechanic wants to purchase a refab engine and install it for 7200 bucks. i dont have that kind of money right now.

i love my talon. and need to find a cheaper way to get it repaired.

If you need a method of transportation rather quickly I'd suggest finding a stock motor from one of the vendors like Miller Import Parts for a reasonable price and have it installed. If you can afford to wait the. figure out what you want with the car and build a motor for your goals.

$7200 better be a built 700hp monster even with install cost.

labor should be around $1000 and the motor could cost any where from $500 to a $2000 for a used stocker up to a rebuilt stocker.

don't be afraid to do the leg work and find a used engine and have it freighted to you. freight shipping can be 150$ - 500$ depending on distance and finding the motor yourself and having it shipped somewhere will save the markup of the shop.

In your situation, I would only suggest pulling the engine yourself and dropping in a good one. Rebuilding an engine is one thing, but its nuts and bolts to pull the engine/trans. You just need a good set of tools, repair manual, hoist or high-lift jacks, and a way to organize parts. A professionally rebuilt engine would be the best for reliability but carries a higher price tag. If your looking for something cheaper then you could find a used engine in good condition and drop it in.

But this is the minimum hands-on level for these cars. Unless you do the hard work yourself, they just aren't worth the cost. So consider your abilities, budget, and how much the car is really worth.

Buy the topline super delux rebuild kit for it. Junk the timing belt for an oem or gates or better. reuse the oem tensioner.

have the head checked. resurface head and block(if needed). Have everything hot tanked. Check and polish crank.

Have a reputable shop/mechanic put it together and install it. Full up with premium. Let it idle out first half tank.

Change oil to your preferred full synthetic oil. ( I would use ams oil.) Next go motoman with other half tank.

Enjoy your new engine.

Or you could shop it to me with 3'000$ & I'll build a 600hp capable engine for you;).

shop round and check all vendor reviews. If you have the know how you can save some money and buid it yourself.

Like I side call us if you need any help, its what were here for :)

Used longblocks can be had for $200-400 if you take some time to look around. I have never paid more then $250.00 for a running engine, and I have purchased ALOT LOL.
Then all you got to do is pull your old one out and install the new, hook up all electrical and bam.

Alot of people swap out there 7-Bolt for 6's in 2G's so they are everywhere.
