420A Block Oil Galley Plugs

Ok for some time now I have been dealing with these small oil galley plugs that are on the sides of the block. One is behind the timing belt cover and one is near the rear main seal on the block. Now I tried to experiment tapping and threading this plugs sealing surface on one of my other 420a blocks I have and I am not so sure it is going to seal, using a 1/2 inch threaded plug. Has anyone had this problem with these plugs leaking? I have bought the oem plugs from my local dealership and they leaked just like the ones I bought from the automotive store.
I'm looking for some information that would help fix this and seal my leaking plugs.

Just because its not that common a problem (and you have done the basics to stop the leak), I would be really, really sure that the leak is not from somewhere else.

I had oil leaking out of a few exhaust manifold studs, i pulled them out and put hi-temp rtv (gold stuff) and no more leaks.

Those leaks suck to stop, they never seem to go away, atleast for me. I rethreaded mines and stuck a new oil plug in with two copper crush washer, that did the trick for me.

Hmm...now that I re-read your post, I see you did not try any sealant on that plug (I don't know why I original read that in. Speed reading escapes me ).

For nasty, annoying, "can't stop it leaks", I use black RTV. Are you using any kind of thread sealant?

I have used sealants the main one I have tried is permatex hi-tack stuff but have tried rtv sealant also. Is there another type of sealant that people use on these plugs?

I'm with Mark, use a little black RTV on the outside of the freeze plug before installing it. Also clean the mating surfaces of the plug and block with emory cloth to create a smooth and clean finish.

At first i was, then i found out there were oil galleys that ran through them but now no more leaks.
