Well i was driving home tonight in my 1992 Talon. Pull up next to a friend at a stop light and launch the car. Not racing just smoking the tires a bit. About a half mile down the road my oil light comes on. Proceed to stop the car and get out only to notice that the rear wheels and rear end (tailights wing hatch glass) are all covered in oil.

Pulled the dipstick to find absolutly no oil on it :notgood: Look under the car and there is a massive puddle. Trail of oil starts maybe .1 mile back from where the car is sitting.

No visible damage to oil pan, oil filter, engine block. Hoping its something small but this is a massive leak coming from the front drivers side of the engine. Things to check before i yank the engine and go turbo? This is my daily driver and id prefer not to have to tear it apart but if i must i will.

You need to find where the leak is coming from. Is it from behind timing belt cover? Might be your crank seal, check that area brfore pulling the engine.

Check your oil filter and see if it's loose. Mine likes to back off every now and again and the oil can disappear fast.

This is very common on 4G63s.

/\ His oil cooler is probably ok. As I understand only the 90's have this problem, the cooler is a sandwich type deal, with thin fins that can be crushed easially. Ptting the filter on too tight squishes it, ruining it.

I think you have it backwards. IIRC the 90's use an air to oil cooler and his '92 does not. While the oil cooler could possibly be ok (mine is even though I have to retighten every now and again) he might have accidentally crushed it. I always hear of converting to a 90 style cooler but I could be wrong.

Yeah, the '90 has an air-to-oil cooler, sits in front of the radiator, on the driver side. Then it moved to a water-cooled, which is where the filter screws in. Not sure what year.

my filter backed out a little bit, allowing my O-ring to be blown to pieces and i had a trail from my filter alot like u described, it happened while i was at WOT... maybe see if u see an orange oring torn apart

probably oil filter. this has happened to me.... 3 times? even once with a mitsu oil filter... but the stud on the inside was loose. tightened it up, havnt had this problem since.

check the oil filter cause one morning i woke up to see a puddle of oil under my car and it was because the filter was a little loose... :notgood:

Is the oil coming out of one side of the motor? Is it the side with all the belts? If so its probably a bad bearing seal. You have a non-turbo so it shouldn't be an oil cooler prob. If oil is coming out of your rear main seal you won't see any oil on the top of your engine, but this is an expensive fix. :dsm: :barf:
