I just blew my motor yesterday, so I'm planning to swap the motor. Got a few questions though...

1) Would the Evo III directly bolt-on to my 2G, or do I have to modify it a little bit? If so, what do I need to modify?

2) Would the 1G motor directly fit my 2G, or does that also need to be modded? If so, what needs to be modded?

I can get both motors for $500 flat, so I'm not talking price range here. I'm just wondering what's better for my car because I REALLY don't want anything to go wrong. I literally blew everything possible on the car already, and a newer motor messing up on my would not help. So which should I put in my 2G?

the 1G motor will fit with some small mods. I would go with the 1G(90-91) 6-bolt....the 92-99 4g 7-bolt are prown to have crank walk. If ya can get rods and pistons out of your motor and put them in the new 6-bolt motor. The 95-99 7-bolt rods and pistons are better.

The Evo 3 engine would be more of a direct fit and cost a lot less to install, compared to a 6bolt engine

The 7 bolt rods are substantially weaker than the 6 bolt rods, and crankwalk is more overrated than American Idol.

really I was told by a DSMWiseman in DSMTALK that the rods and pistons are better from teh 7-bolt. I was tolds the pistons have better compression numbers than the 6 bolt

I was half wrong the pistons are better while the rods are smaller...My BAD

plus the 7 bolt rods wont bolt up to the 6 bolt crank.. best stock replacement is the 2g pistons on the 1g rods... worked good for me

The EVO III is a 1g 7bolt motor. Some things will be different. As far as being easier than a 6bolt swap, sure. I however would vote for the 6bolt swap if it needed it.

For being more reliable, I would do a complete gasket overhaul kit, and timing belt kit at the minimum. Personally, I would go as far as to get all new bolts and ect but I have been known to be anal. :D

It's the same motor as a 94 7 bolt. :) However there are some slight differences.

They will not bolt into a 1G because there are no provisions for the front roll stopper motor mounts that bolt to the block. Everything in Japan from 94 and up has the front and rear roll stopper motor mounts on the transmission 2G Eclipse style. Many people are running around yapping about how they have an EVO motor in their car. If it bolts into a 1G, it isn't an EVO motor.

just get the evo motor then, but if its jdm and you have to worry about emissions then maybe think twice. But if that motor doesnt work definitly get a 6 bolts, its just a little extra insurance thats all. While your at it do everything to it thats easy to do while the engines out because if you forget to add or do something that is hard after its in the car then you'll be sos because you couldve did it when it was cheap while the motor was out. Example . put a new water pump, put new bearings and rings, put all new gasket kit, and might as well get a multi layer gasket kit on it while your at it, you could even do a port and match. Those are half the things ive done upon my rebuild. Then with those things done it should be a pretty good motor.

I would go with the EVO III motor for sure. Due to the fact that it is the newest 7 bolt 4G63 that will practically drop right into your car.

Where are you getting your new engine from?

My friend shipped one over from Japan for me, but it's still in tha warehouse cause I didn't pick it up yet.

I got another question though.....

Since the Evo III motor will directly bolt onto my 2G GSX, it'll directly bolt onto the tranny as well right?

If it is pretty much a '94 7bolt I don't see why there would be any problems with the transmission bolting up.

Good luck with the swap, and post some picture/results if you've got the time.
