I have a big problem! I have a 1991 GST and I resently replaced the head gasket, intake gasket, valves, guides, and seals. I replaced all the because it was smokeing out of the exhaust, oil was shooting out of the side of teh engine, smoke was coming out of the intake and BOV! I am also running a walbro 190 with stock injecters FYI. After I installed all of this back on I had the timeing mark on the crank shaft at the 11 o'clock instead of the 2 o'clock for the 91. When I tried to turn the engine over after a few sec. it blew a cloud of smoke out of the intake! When I finally figured out what I had done wrong I called my self a dumb ass, fixed the timeing and hoped for the best. Once I did that I started the car and took it for a test drive. It vibrated very bad and had no acceleration. After thinking a little I decided to check my spark plugs and sure enough I had one of them bent to no gap at all! I regapped it and test drove my car. It drove smooth as ever, but when it is at idle and I hit the gas in nuetral all the way it bogs down the reves up! When I get aroung 80 mph it has almost no acceleration. Also it blows a great deal of smoke out of the exhaust and shoots oil out of the oil cap! When I had the head off I saw that the number 2 piston had 2 half MM deep grooves in the cylinder wall! After talking to some people they said I probalby have blow by! I'm doing compression test tomorrow so I will have that posted later! Could the timing be still a few degree's off, Is a valve bent or so I have a crap engine. Also the engine has 180K on it! Anything will help!!!!

You didnt say why you had the head off in the first place, but i'll give it a try. When you had the problem first and had the valve job, did the check for warpage? with 180k on it you may have poor compression, check that. What kind of oil have you ran in it, try Mobil 1 it will burn for alittle bit if its the first time but then it will clean you entire engine, that way if a ring is stuck it way free it up. Check your timing with the crank position sensor, you could be 180 out, bring the number 1 to top dead center on the compression strok the line up the factory marks and reinstall it. Try this and let me know what your comp. readings are. Also if you dont have one get a chiltons manual on the car, it can be a life saver.

When you retimed the car did you make sure that you put the oil pump in the right position. Check out VFAQ.com I think you have to rotate the oil pump sprocket twice before it fully turns over inside. So even if you lined it up the timing could be way off for the oil pump. I ran my car like that for a couple days till I figured it out no damage done.

For the first question I took off my head to replace the head gasket because smoke was comming out of the head gasket. I got my head magnaflexed and it got resurfaced 1/30 of an inch. I will get some mobile 1 tomorrow and retry. I will post my compression numbers with the old oil ($1.29 per quart, thin as water), then I will redue it with the new oil and also post them. Also when I retimed my car I lined up my oil pump sprocket on the mark and someone told me to test it by turning it a few degree's then releaseing it and it should go back into the same possition, which it did. Also I stuck a long punch through the side of the engine block and it went through about 3 inches; But I think thats just to make sure that its on the mark not timed correctly! Also did your car have loss of power when you drove it and bogged down some when you hit the gas at idle or oil squirting out of the cap? Also how do I check my timeing with th ecrank position sensor? Also I have a haynes auto manual.

Kyle Adams,

I dont know the average compression of a turbo 2.0, but I knoe thatvyou dont want it more than 10-15 psi off from each cylinder. Mine are number 1 cylinder 125, 2 cyl. 25, 3 cyl. 122, 4 cyl, 122! The 25 is a big problem. So tomorrow I am putting i n60w motor oil and hopefully that will help some if not I am rebuilding teh engine and that will suck!!! Also I found out that oil was leaking out if the valve cover. I cracked it when I had tieghten the screw to much. If anyone knows of anything else I can do to fix it besides revbuilding the engine please tell me!

I dont remember if you said how many miles you had on it so i go another route. Did you inspect the cylider walls when you had the head off.You may have a broken ring or something like that, you would be able to tell be the scoring on the wall. Also, did you over heat it, i just did mine and had to redeck and do a valve job. A way to test it is put a teaspoon of oil in number 2 then check the comp. if it goes way up your rings are bad or it could be a slightly bent valve.

As for a bent valve, does it backfire alittle? If it does that would be my guess. Let me know We'll figure it out.

As for the Crank sensor, there is a v at the end of the wings, look at the center of the wings and there should be a notch on one side, that is your TDC compression make. Sorry i can't think of a better way to explain it but if your manual doesn't have a picture of it go to Books a million and just read that section, it shows a picture.

It has 180K and I did the teaspoon of oil and compression still sucks! I did have my timeing off when I put the timeing belt back on and it blew smoke out of the intake. So it could very well have a bent valve. Also it back fires like CRAZY!!! Very loud! Also when I had the head off there was 2 grooves in the cylinder wall. What do you think?

yes only in the number 2 cylinder. I found out some new info! The oil was never shooting out of the oil cap it was leaking out of my valve cover because I just noticed that I cracked it when I was tightening down my bolts. So could it jsut be a bent valve in my 2nd cylinder because number 1, I had it timed wronge when I first turned it over and blew smoke out of the intake. 2ndly, It ran fine before I did this work to it, why would it all of a sudden lose compression? It doesnt make sense? Is there any way I could test to see if the valve is bent without taking off the head? Or worst of all do I have to spend $50 and let the dealership take a look at it? Please help and reply ASAP!

Kyle,

I took off the head and found out that the valves were fine, but I did a test and found out that the rings are bad. So now I almost have the engine pulled and if anyone has any info that may help please tell me!

Kyle,

If you want to check for bent valves you have to do a leakdown test.

I don't think you bent a valve I think you broke a piston ring. Check your timing if it's dead on there's pretty much no way you could have bent one. Also try changeing your oil. If you broke enough of that ring out there is probably flakes of metal in the oil pan.

Here's a link on what happens when you have a broken ring maybe some symptoms you can look for and what happens if you wait too long.
