Will BG help the roughness of getting my shifter from 1st into 2nd.

And how many quarts are needed for a 91 transmission?

Also I heard its good to use half BG half Redline. True?

sorry to ask so many questions at once

Assuming nothing is broken/ wrong with your transmission, BG Syncroshift should help smooth things out. But it is not an end all be all cure for hard shifting.

Manual Tranny takes 2.4 quarts, Auto tranny takes a bit more something like 7 qts, but I'm not sure about the automatics

I don't think that is a good idea. Besides, Redline comes in so many different consistencies (Lightweight v.s. Heavyweight), mixing chemicals like this sounds like a very bad idea.

Yes, BG will help... but it's not a cure by any means... Secondly I would NOT mix any transmission fluids... they have different chemical properties and could cause more damage than help...

If you don't want to fork over the cash for BG, or can't locally get it I would recommend Penzoil/GM Syncromesh - this can be found at your local parts store (Autozone) and runs $5 a quart...

I am also interested to know if the Penzoil one is just as good as BG, and the exact name/weight that is best for our cars. Thanks!

I put BG Synchroshift II in my 2G, and I noticed that low RPM shifts were more difficult. I put a new clutch in a month ago, and since I lost about half of the tranny fluid while moving it around, I topped it off with GM Synchromesh. This dramatically improved low RPM shifts, but I want to say that the high RPM shifts are now not as good as when it was pure BG Synchroshift.

Everyone has their own opinion. You might as well experiment with different ones.

I've seen several posts that say GM Synchromesh is Pennzoil Synchromesh is Quaker State Synchromesh. It doesn't technically have a GL rating, since it is some hybrid mix that they came up with, but it is intended for transmissions with GL-4 spec and yellow metals (brass, etc.).

Hey guys i had a quick question will it be good to use one of the following either BG or Pennz and add a bit of Lucas thing to it? Thanks for your response.

I would just use Redline MTL. Synchroshift while it works good at making the shifter less notchy, wasn't designed for our transmissions and can shorten the life of the synchros.

too late i bought BG and redline last week. thanks tho i'll get pennz if i ever need anymore tranny oil for a better price. but honestly i hear that BG mixed with Redline can feel like a new tranny. worth the 60 bucks even its only a posibility of this "feels like a new transmission" happens. NO matter how unlikely. My 1-2 shift is rough!

So far as I can find out, the only drawback to the BG and Redline is their prices. The Pennzoil is perhaps the biggest bargain in the DSM world.

There has been some talk of Redline not being compatible with the brake material in DSM synchros, but Road//Race Engineering recommends it, and they're seldom wrong.

My experience with Redline MTL-90 isn't necessarily bad but for the $30 bucks I forked over the the 3 bottles, I expected to see at least some difference. Unfortunately nothing changed, so I'm switching over to Penzzoil Syncromesh very soon, around the same time I buy my short shifter.
