Early 1992 stronger motor and stronger rear end. i assumed AWD was a given and did not need to be said GSX or tsi AWD.

personnally i got a talon, but DON'T GET A TALON OR LASER!! cause its hard to find people that know about them...chrysler dealerships don't know shit...so you have ot take your car to a mitsu...i don't know...its just harder to get people who know about them. dealerships suck anyway. but if you can get a mitsu, do that instead

i suggest getting a early 92 laser. lightest of the bunch, generally cheaper to buy, still has 6 bolt 4 bolt combo.

I assume the poster is interested in drag, not autocross, time trialing, rallycross, etc.

For drag, 1992 Plymouth Laser RS AWD with absolutely no options: no ABS, no A/C, no sunroof, etc. Make sure it's a 6-bolt engine with a 4-bolt rearend. Lightest DSM you can buy, with the most potential with the least amount of stuff breaking on you right away.

But you'll still break stuff. ;)

1998 eclipse gsx, swap motor with a 6bolt/4bolt combo :D

I guess I sort of fluked out.I just liked the looks of the 92/93 talons a bit better than the lasers since the talons have the ground effects and all that. Then as I modded and read more I discovered I had the 6 bolt engine and the 4 bolt rear end.:D So that is a good thing. Now the 92 supposedly don't have as smooth trannies as 93 and on but hear lots of problems on the 2g trannies with breaking 3 and 4 gear not sure about 5 once you get a lot of power. Also 93 have the bigger front brakes but plan on buying 2g calipers since they just bolt on.

The 2 g are nice but 1g are more affordable to start with but generally will have more miles and need more initial maintenance.

Also my 92 doesn't have flip up lights which I am not crazy about. My car is also a stripper ,no air,no power windows or locks or sunroof,no abs.
Suits me just fine as really more interested in speed and lighter weight is a good thing for that. And less stuff to break.

So thats about it..the 2g are nice and sleeker looking but to me the 1g especially talons have a bit more distinctiveness. They don't look like other cars on the road. The 2g sometimes fool me until I see the hood or get close. The saturns do seem to look a bit like the 1gs though from the sides and rear.

Anyway lots of guys seem to rip out their 7 bolt engines and install 6 bolt or swap rearends for the 4 bolt etc.
You can do anything with money. I just came across mine at a auction a month ago and since then have really thrown the mods into it and it is getting decently fast and will be faster when I get some time and bolt on my new 50trim.:D

i agree wit ^^logic^^ and ^^dsmturboawd^^. a 92 laser awd definetly the way to go.

guess im set:laser: :thumb:

To this day I kick myself for letting a 92 laser with no a-c sunroof ect.
get away, now their are hard to find in good shape but the hunt is
half the fun!: :talon:

yea not to offend anyone but 1gs are ugly as f%#^. Get a 97-99 gsx and if the overly blown out of proportion thing called crankwalk does take over then swap in a 90-92 motor....

Well I asked a female friend if she liked the 1g or 2 g better. She said the 1g looked nice and had personality.

Also have had several females check out my car and notice that quite a few drive the 1g cars usually non turbo so guess it depends on who you want to notice your car.:D

I really think you have to do quite a lot to the 2gs to make them stand out from the crop of new look alike type cars. Not that they don't look nice too just that they are way more money than 1gs.

I agree. the 97-99s look so sweet :thumb:

but the 1st gens have the advantage of a 6 bolt motor, plus they look good too.

Looks are subjective and not even the topic of this thread. A 1G awd early 92 dsm is the best platform for buliding a performance dsm.

Period.

I have a Talon, it is true that SOME dealers that SHOULD work on them wont. But I have not had any problems with it in my area.

The talon looks the best of the 1G's IMO, so I only look for talons.

well first off i dont know what a 6 bolt 4bolt combo is so please school me on that one, and the other thing is im looking at 2 talons, one is for 4k and the guy put a completely rebuilt engine (stock)in it with 10k miles on it i think its a 90 or 91 (fresh paint job also)
second is a 90 with a rebuilt engine with je pistons bored .40 over and head job for 5k only thing is that the tranny is blown but the guy who is selilng it has a tranny to replace it and will put in a act clutch and sell it for 5k. this motor is still just getting broken in. Im not sure which one to get the one for 4k seems a little more realistic to me because it looks mint i still havent seen the other talon though, what do u guys think i should go with, theres a few mods done to each car but that isnt what im worried about cuz i have the money to do the mods i just wanna know which car i should go with.

like 90 percent of you are saying you love a certain kind of car and That certain kind of car is the ONE YOU DRIVE.. of course your going to be bias and choose your own kind of car. i personally love the 1g body style becuase for some reason it looks old skool JDM like, kinda fits in with the rx7 turbo IIs and 240s. As for the 2gs, Yes, the 97-99 look great from all around, but the 95-96s are nice too because they were the TRUE transformed 1g to 2g cars plus i chose my 95 awd becuase it is electric blue which i havent seen stock on 97-99s and i have EPROM for my upcoming DSMLINK :p

6 bolt motor, 6 bolts connect the flywheel to the crank.
4 bolt rear-end, 4 bolts on the rear axle.

Get whatever car YOU WANT TO DRIVE. For me, 99 GSX 6bolt swap. Don't get a laser if you don't want to drive a laser, but for the value, 92 laser or talon. Good luck! :)

this may seem like a dumb question but im just getting into the dsm side so i have to ask, from looking at a engine bay would there be any way to tell you if the engine is a 6 bolt 4bolt setup? or will i have to take the word from the guy selling it?
