My brother is aiming for high 11s in his 2g fwd Tsi... He is ordering the Shep Stage 2 tranny but which lsd should he go with? Kaaz or Quaife? Looking for reliability as well. Thanks.

first, i have a kaaz diff in my 89 colt gt...and its a great LSD. however, i would recommend a gear type differential to most people because of the chattering, stress and higher maint. of a clutch type diff.

for most people in MOST situations, a torsion biasing gear type differential will work just fine. the only time a torsion biasing diff will not work as well is under braking and if one of the driving wheels is off of the ground. my plan is to road race the colt...which is why i went this route...but i've hated the differential on many occasions when it makes noise and prematurely wears the front axles.

I ran a Quaife in my GST as well, and I was very happy with it, but it was a street car.

I started this thread a while back and I gathered that both are very nice units and you'd probably be happy with either one. But the majority stated that the Kaaz was probably better for drag racing purposes and the Quaife for spirited street driving.

I have used the Kaaz before and I wouldn't really recommend it for everyday driving. It's nice on the track but taking fast corners it tends to wanna push a little bit. What happened to that 330-350hp goal Paul?

If its a full out drag only car then I would say go Kaaz, if its a street driven car & you don't want to know its there till you need it I would defently recommend the Quaife. Both corners & straights are a tonn better compared to stock. When you push it, it feels like a completely different car.

Another benefit of the quaife front LSD is that it has a lifetime warranty, and covers all breakage (street or drag racing).

I have heard from several accounts of the KAAZ being better at locking up both equally for drag racing. I personally am going to go with the quaife, because I have broken several differentials, and I am sick of paying for new ones all the time.

Quaife is also notoroious for denying warranty claims on it.

I'd go with the KAAZ myself.

really...that is good to know. I have only heard of claims being denied on their center differentials.

Do you know which specific parts break in any of the quaife breakages? is it a design flaw, or a problem that can be modified to be better?

How is the Kaaz?

I will be running a race only setup consisting of a dogbox and a center diff spool, is there a "best fit" for this setup? I know that John uses a LSD insert like the one I currently have in his setups he sells.

Also, back to the quaife vs. kaaz vs. LSD insert -- If I break a front axle going down the track, is the kaaz or the quaife going to lock up and send me into a wall?

My last broken front diff was a LSD-insert (slowboy) cryo'd differential -- broke a tooth off of a spider gear, and trashed the carrier. The roll pin holes were marred up upon the breakage, and now I cannot get my LSD insert out. I am going to need to drill out the hole to do so (only option I can think of).

What was that about the sbr diff insert breaking because i just had a diff locker dropped in from them and their 3500 clutch with my fidanza flywheel. Im now wondering am I going to regret putting the locker in?

Thanks for making me wonder twicks! LOL

Are you sure about this? I have never heard of this for the front diffs, the center diffs for awd is another story & the info about not having a full lifetime warranty for the center diff is available for everyone to see.

dsm4fun, will the insert make it easier for the diff to explode, probably not but it also won't make the stock diff any less resistant to exploding becasue of wheel hop. Wheel hop is usually what takes out the diff in fwd cars & the only way to prevent this from happeing is replaceing your stocker with a true LSD such as the Quaife.

I agree daren with both statements.

The most important things to reduce wheel hop are upgraded motor mounts, suspension bushings, and a properly maintained setup.

I am running the prothane mount setup with inserts in the front/back, and 2-piece setups in the pass/drivers mounts. I am going to fabricate up a metal fixed front mount, and a high durometer rear solid mount out of urethane or delron.

As for the LSD insert, it may increase the potential for breakage; especially if you don't have a solid mount setup.

Man now i got to put a full diff in totally weak! I feel my wallet shrinking alreadyLOL Also guys id like to say that im not draggin the car every weekend or something I hardly ever do. I just wanted to know if i felt like it i would grab with two tires not one!

But thanks for the info

Well I would say with a proper setup you are much less likely to blow a diff on the street. I don't have full urthane motor mounts (just front & rear torques but side & tranny will come eventually), adjustable suspension & the Quaife. On the street, traction is dame good for a higher hp fwd & I never get wheel hop even if it starts to slip. I don't know if it was just because the track was just too dame cold the first time I went this past fall as the air temps weren't much above freezing but I was wheel hopping like a mother ..... Glad I had the Quaife installed or I might have been coming home on a trailer.

So Daren you would prefer the Quaife then, The reason i was asking is i currently have a 95 GST 5spd, but found a 99 GST auto for 800, blown engine. Well so i was going to pull the modds and engine drop them into the 99, and also do a auto/man swap at the sametime, and while i was doing that i was going to upgrade to a ACT 2100 clutch and upgrade the flywheel either ACT or Fidanze (researching that right now), go to poly motor mounts, and get a LSD. i figure everthing would be easier to do at once, So let me know what you think

I love my Kaaz. It kinda sucks for every day driving cause it wants to pop during low speed turns, and push just for a second in turns before glueing the car to the road. But over all I love it :)
