i was wondering what is the best all around choice for upgrading the exhaust system for a 2G. i am also looking for a system that will give off a "deep-tone". i have been recommended to go with either with the Apexi N1 or one by Greddy. however, i have checked out Apexi's website and it says that the N1 is good for high end power, but they also offer the WS (world sport) muffler that, they claim, will be good for mid to high end power. are these the only decent choices that i have for a daily driven car or are their others?(i am NOT looking to just upgrade the muffler but put in a hi flow cat, too.)

I love my greddy evo exhaust. 3.15" catback. The sound is great, very smooth, not raspy at all. Power increase was very nice. :thumb: When cruising at highway speed, it is very quiet and not annoying at all. but at WOT it is very throaty and deep rumble. i highly reccomend it. :thumb: The apexi n1 sounds nice also, but i personally like my greddy better. to bad blitz doesnt make the nur-spec-r for our cars. :D

I just got my VRS 2.5" turbo-back exhaust w o2 eliminator today! The cost is 700 bucks shipped and its even mandrel bent.. nice. Took a whole 3 days to get it after I ordered it. I will throw some pics up soon as i get home as im at work right now. Ill even post a vid of it when i get it installed this weekend so you can hear it.

i have full Apex n1 and i love it. The sound is really nice at idle, it can get a little loud at WOT but what do you expect i guess hah. Ive heard the greddy too and i like that as well. If you get a full apex n1 setup you wont have to worry about a hi flo cat, because the downpipe eliminates the cat. I vote for apex, but im biased

i also have a catless Apexi DP. :thumb:
hah i looked at your mod list after i posted that and saw that..hah nice mods so far, sounds familiar to what i am going for in the near future.

sorry for the mini thread hijack.

What you want really depends on how much you want to spend. You can get a full apex setup from www.extremepsi.com i think for like 669.00 i think. Which is a relatively good deal. I like name brands myself, but another route could be with having a custom exhaust made, its cheaper....but i go with trusted brands myself

i'm also curious on what kind of exhaust but i dont want it to sound like a honda and i'm affraid to eliminate the cat because i'll get pulled over for sound or not pass emissions what should i do?
so my guidelines are:
-needs to pass emissions
-can't get pulled over loud.
-can't' be an arm and a leg i'd rather have the local muffler shop build me one for and just buy the components(muffler, cat, flexpipe)
-thats all

under those circumstances, i reccomend Greddy Evo with an RNR downpipe and high-flow cat. you will like it, and it sounds awsome. and any exhaust you put onto a turbo DSM, will sound great. it will never sound like a honda. :thumb:

yeah as long as you get the cat then you "should" be good for emissions. Like greenmachine pretty much any exhaust on a turbo dsm will sound nice.

some 2.5-3" piping w/turbo exhaust will make your car sound good.
wont be ricey.
full 3" piping w/o cat and w/o resonator will sound really loud.

ok, u guys have mentioned brand names like greddy. but greddy offers a few exhaust systems for the 2G. which one do most people go with? i am now SERIOUSLY considering the greddy Evo2 exhaust system. it sounds like a good choice. remember, i would like a deep-tone, more-of-a-growl type of sounding muffler. what decible should i be looking for if i wanted that?

one more question. most states (including MA) have a regualtion that says no more than 95 decibles that the muffler should make. For example, say i buy an aftermarket muffler, and i test the decibles it puts out. if it only puts out 83 decibles at, say 3k rpms, can i tune it to go to, say, in the low 90s? thanks guys.

well im pretty sure that you cant make it quieter without a silencer, (comes with the apexi n1 ;) ). Otherwise im pretty sure that whatever decibles the exhaust emits is going to say that way, unless you get a silencer. Also with a CAT you will also have a little quieter exhaust.

no cats no nothin.. 3" ful exhaust ATR. sounds like a race car up top :thumb: cant really hear it once the wastegate dumps tho

On my 97 GST

I have Road Race Engineering's downpipe and their testpipe. I also have their cat for inspection time.

The rest is the Greddy EVO. I love the Greddy EVO, excellent flanges, smooth bends, excellent quality......sounds good too. The tip is nice too. AND THE PIPING IS HUGE.

On my 92 TSI AWD, I have the Apexi N1 downpipe and the N1 exhaust. The piping is not as big as the Greddy EVO and the bends aren't nearly as nice. The bends are pieced together, not nearly as nice as the Greddy. I do like the coating on the N1's pipes. The muffler part and the tip look good too. But I thihk the EVO is better looking on a 2G.

My vote is the EVO. Consider RRE for the downpipe.

Honestly just about ALL the turbo dsm's I've heard sound the exact same, even though they have different exhausts. The really only difference will be how loud/quiet it is, basically the pitch. I'm running the RRE 3" catless dp with evo3 o2 and custom 3" mandrel catback. It's fairly loud, but it sounds SO DAMN GOOD. I've had some people ask me if I had a v6 in it  , simply because at idle it sounds like a beast. :thumb:
