So I figured while i have the turbo not installed yet, I'd get the hotside ported and coated before it goes in for good. Not really having the time, or the desire to be breathing in cast iron dust for an hour or so, I had my local machine shop do the work. Only cost me $40, which I think is one hell of a deal. Opinions?

I'm surprise they ported the materials on top of the wastegate entrance, did you print the directions from this site or did they do all that on their own?

Did it all himself. I just said "can you clean this up a little?" and thats what he did....

In all honesty, he has never owned a DSM, and that turbo was directly from PTE before he got his hands on it.

The kid and his father run a machina shop out of an old barn. They are legit "geniouses" and decided to make a career building motors from it. The father actually had a full on scholarship to MIT, but didnt go.

He actually a big VW guy, just knows his stuff I guess. Just have to get that boy coated and then it can go on the car, I can't wait.

wow your in caton ct? im in torrington so i have to ask this. where the hell did you have it ported? ill def be going by there ive got my motor out right now and got a built one and ill be upgradeing my turbo very soon :)

He's in New hartford, Now i have to ask who you are, since i probably know either you or your car...

Most any shop would know to port the wastegate area, its not rocket science at all and its pretty obvious by looking at something like that, that the area has to be ported. Looks good though, good luck.

If its a PTE housing, there is no step to be ported.... you probably just wasted $40. Looks like he gouged up the thing towards the bottom more than anything.

i doubt you know me but ive got a blue an silver 1g its a 91 with a 92 front end my friend raif is doing my trans and motor ill have it running again in a few weeks then i got to paint it and im set

Raif eh? I just baught my MLS gasket from him, and from what i hear he builds a pretty good tranny.

Even if there wasn't a step to be removed that doesn't mean that more material can't be removed for even better flow. Not to mention he cleaned up the wastegate hole and smoothed it out which will help even more with curing boost creep. I say it's money well spent. :thumb:

yeah when im all said and done ill be pushing 500 or 550 whp is race car is pushing over 800 he def knows what hes doing

Bench racing, uggg.

The sand casting pits are still visible. Little to no material was removed to make a substantial difference. It looks like the grinder was bouncing around at the bottom. The whole point of porting is to let the air (or in this case exhaust gas) go where it wants to go. Creating divots further down the housing will not free up any power.

These bolt on PTE housings don't need to be ported unless you are removing the WG flapper and running an external WG.
I can't see enough of the WG passage to comment on it.
You wasted your money, luckily it wasn't a lot.

You didn't waste your money. The port job was a very good value for the price. PTE housings DO NOT come with the step removed completely. When I got my new one in (PTE5031RLE) I had to do a lot more porting to be satisfied with it. Good step work and a small amount of material was removed, not too bad. :thumb:

I'm not convinced there's truly a lot of raw benefit from most porting work. I'll give it one thing, it sure helped my last t28's turbine housing be more prone to hairline cracks.
