what are people getting when they platiguage there bearings for the rods and mains?? WTF

My rod clearences were all around .0011. My mains were all around .0010 in. What are yours?

I got around .0015 or so mains and rods.

Plastigauge isn't exactly very accurate ...

i got between .0015 and .002 for both my mains and rods

Same here... Up to .002 is within spec, .004 is max allowable, although I wouldn't run that large of clearance. Tighter bearing clearances will yield higher oil pressures as well. With mine, BS removal, new oil pump, I get 3/4 to H on the stock oil gauge when driving, fully warm.

Rods .0015-.0021
Mains .0015-.0025

I was measuring with dial bore gauges though (ones that read to .0001 are great!) and micrometers. Plastigage is pretty inconsistent. Only problem with the bore gauge is that it shows all the crazy out of roundness and taper from top notch machine work :p Upwards of .0005" is common in my case. The truth is that under running conditions perfect clearances likely go out the window anyway.

I don't trust plastigauge at all. Any time I build a motor I use micrometers and bore gauges. That being said it is nice to be able to buy such an expensive tool. For most of your out there doing a mostly stock buildup with not much hp you can get away with using plastigauge (as long as you don't get any weird readings). If you are doing a high hp buildup and you don't have access to these tools than I would recommend you take the pieces to a machine shop and have them mic them for you....shouldn't be more than $40 at the most...and they can tell you the clearences. For a low hp/dd I would recommend keeping the clearences tight..... around .001" to .0015" for both rods and mains. If this is a high hp motor that will see alot of high rpm and abuse than I would try to keep the tolerances around .002" and maybe as high as .0025". Hope this helps and good luck. Proper attention to detail now will pay off later.
