Here's the situation- I'm in the market for a new car. I'm not gonna lie, my first choice is either a 93-99 Camaro or Trans Am. However being on such a tight budget, I don't think I can afford such an endeavor- that's where my second choice comes in, a 95-99 Turbo DSM. Similiar sporty performance for a much cheaper admission price.

Here is my question to all of you if you would be kind as to answer:

How much money and/or what mods would it take to get a stock 2G Turbo DSM to tie OR beat a stock LS1 (98-02 F-Body) from a dead stop to about 70mph drag race?

Pretty plain and simple. Much apretiated. ;)

ok this is basically bench racing but in order get even with a stock LS1 you would have to have a very well tuned AWD DSM with all the stage 1 mods at minimum. Even then.. you would prolly lose. If money is an issue an LT1 isnt a bad choice either. The LT1 is about the same price as a 2gen dSM

evo3 16g, fmic, injectors, fuel control, fuel pump, boost controller, intake, exhaust, ported exhaust manifold should have you near there on pump gas, and if you aren't there, then you will be on race gas.

think about what you are buying. If you are going for just pure speed on a budget get like a 93-95 LT1 for like 4-5k. They run a mid 13 i wanna say compared to the mid 15 of a DSM. Plus the LT1 will respond to mods very well. The only thing that made me buy this car is the AWD. If it were not for AWD I would not have it. Lets not turn this into a bench racing moded DSM vs stock LS1 thread.

i've got a 98gst (fwd) and with the stock turbo, stock intercooler, stock fuel, just dejon tool uicp, and gm maft, (blow thru) and exhaust trapped 96mph in the 1/4 and after putting on a 14b, 190lph pump, and a starion fmic, i've trapped 106mph in the 1/4 and killed lots of lt1s, srt4s, lots of 4.6 stangs, and a freinds full bolt on notch 5.0. all for under 2k in mods, and that includes all the must have stuff like gauges, etc. all on stock wheels, stock tires. it's all in the tune and the way you mod it. i'll be getting my evoIII 16g and 660cc injectors this winter, and hope to trap 115mph next year, and hopefully learn the art of launching the powerful fwd car, and be in the mid/low 12s.

err... LT1 in the 13's? BARELY with an amazing driver- I've not seen a stock one break 14.0 The LT4 yes, the LS1 yes, but few and far between are the 13 second STOCK LT1's. Even mild mods- I've seen them run 14's. The LT1 has plenty of TQ, but it lacks the HP- most LT1 vs LS1 races I've seen, with both stock, the LT1 does fine until about 3rd gear. Then it's all LS1.

I ran a heads/cam LT1 in my stealth while it was BPU, totally even from a roll on- that put it around low 13 best- 105ish traps. that's a heads and cam 6spd with gears, fuel, filter, exhaust, etc...

rule of thumb- LT1 95-99mph - LS1 -103-107mph - stock traps - if you aren't out trapping them, you better be AWD :)

yep my bad the LT1 is a low 14 and the LS1 is the mid 13. Still if i only had a limited amount of money and wanted pure speed the LT1 would be a better option than a DSM. LS1 is in a totally different class... you just cant compare a DSM to a LS1.

One problem- Insurance. That's why the DSM would be cheaper. I might also note that to save on the cost of a new vehicle, If I were to own a moded DSM/F-body, I would buy it pre-moded.

eh, I might also not that I'm not going to take my car to the track, or RACE an LS1. I was just wondering how it felt performance wise. I'm just looking for something quick/fast to zip around town in. :shhh:

well if you're going for how it "feels" that's an entirely different thing altogether. :) torque= the feeling of going fast
hp= the art of going fast.
my dsm is fast. it doesnt jerk you back in the seat though. it doesn't "feel" fast.
if you want to "feel" fast, buy a 5.0 notch mustang.
