While the adjust timing check box is set the ECU is not going to apply any timing advance to the idle settings. That doesn't however mean that your timing is really 5* BTDC if you actually have some way to adjust it.

On a stock 2g engine the crank sensor is fixed but if you have/using a 1G CAS in the car the timing is adjustable and you have to use a timing light to make sure the actual matches the ECU's idea of what the timing is.

That's what the option is for, to set a fixed timing to allow you to adjust the sensor to match the ECU.

The problem is that i have an inductive timing light with no screen and no timing cover, also i don't understand how to know my timing if the timing light doesn't have a screen by just looking at the camgears, how do you know if you need to advance or retard if you dont see a number?. i had been tuning cars since 08 but i never messed with the base timing because they were 2g with no ajustibility.

Sorry, sometimes you get confuse with the most simple things.

If you have an adjustable timing light, you can set it to 10ATDC and point it at the cam gears. Then adjust the CAS until the light is firing when the marks are aligned.

With a non-adjustable, you can't use the gears, you need a lower timing cover (which you should have anyway).

Bringing this one back. Is this correct?

The tech article below states the following:

"7. If you have an adjustable timing light, set it to 5* advanced."

Can somebody verify one of these methods?

The person he was talking to has a 2G and may not have a way to lock the ECU into set timing mode.
In set timing mode the ECU holds 5* BTDC but out of set timing mode at factory idle at sea level the ECU will use between 8* and 10* BTDC for timing.

Thank you Steve. His post should at least be edited to say BTDC and when out of the timing set mode . That'd keep people from trying to set their base timing 15* retarded than stock. :D
