oh man, i feel really newb asking this, but i dont know it so here it goes, What exactly is the balance shaft and whats its purpose? why would you want to remove it?i just dont know because ive just recently been getting into cars, like, passionatly.thanks

the balance shaft kind of look like spoons. they counter balance the piston, rod, and crank movement to make the engine smoother. We take them out for a couple of reasons. 1, cause the engines come balenced pretty well from the factory. 2, if the balance shaft belt breaks and gets sucked in to the timing belt say goodbye to your head. 3) less rotational mass equals easier revving and a SMALL increase in HP. 4) no more oil is needed to lubricate a shaft thats no longer there so more pressure for the rest of the engine.

The balance shafts are weighted shafts that spin at TWICE crankshaft rpm to help counter the secondary vibration created by the big 4 cyl motor. The motor still creates the vibration but the balance shafts help keep you from feeling it. Most eliminate them because they are prone to seizing(they spin in plain bearings at up to 14,000rpm!). If they seize it usually throws a belt which can cause the timming belt to jump/break etc bending valves among other things. Not good.
There are two balance shafts and they slide in the front of the motor where the timming belt is.

And don't forget that the balance shafts spin at roughly two times the speed of the engine. Removing these shafts also remove the chance of having a balance shaft bearing spin into the block. Just a good precaution if you have the opportunity. If you do it, make sure its done right. An incorrect balance shaft elimination can cause you to lose all oil pressure.

So is it safe to say if you change your timing belt you might as well eliminate your balance shaft with a kit??

I, however, bought the stubby shaft and front case plug from Mitsubishi. As far as the bearings, I knocked out both for the front/left bs, turned them so the oil hole did not line up, then knocked them back in. For the rear/right bs, I knocked out the bearing and left it out. There is no oil hole in that bearing. You can either use a 32mm socket with an extension or turn the balance shaft around to knock out and re-install the bearings. Total cost was around $14.00.

I also used some JB Weld on the front case plug due to reading that some have had problems with them popping out.
