2G badly rusted frame

Hey I'm in the process of dropping my engine in when I noticed the front framing that the cross member bolts to and lower radiator supports are that goes across the bottom is fairly rusted through.. a friend of mine does some welding and says we can probably just weld some angle iron from side to side to support it and make new brackets for radiator and cross member. Or would it be better to cut the piece off the front end of a junk car and weld on. I'm just looking for the best rought. Its hard to explain in text so ill be putting up pics soon. But anyone who has any good ideas let me know.

You can buy a new radiator support, grind the old one off and weld a new one on.

Or buy some spot weld cutters and do it the right way.

Yes I agree with the others. Buy new Core support and replace it fully.

Or this. Mine had some work done on it so I had to grind it off. But a spot weld cutter would work better if yours isnt molested like mine was.

I didn't mean to be a dick with my last comment. It's just best to do things the right way if at all possible. Makes for a cleaner car in the end.

I'm replacing my lower rad support in a couple of weeks.

Be careful with the cheap eBay/Parts Store core supports, sometimes they are of a lower quality metal and will rust out even faster then OEM. IF you drive your car in the winter or live on the cost like I do, treat the metal with something to protect it. I use POR 15 and Eastwood Internal Frame coating.

Id rather have a new core than a rotted out pos...I bought my core 4 years ago and its still 100% rust free. That's what paint is for
My"cheapo core" has a Black Anodized coating, Then I primed and painted it to prevent rust. Obviously the OEM ones arent that great...After all they ALL seem to be rotting away right.

I hate when people BASH everything sold On Ebay...Just cause they heard someone else say it was BAD...yet they have NO first hand experience haha. Ebay doesn't MAKE parts...its just an auction web site.



My car was only 10 years old when I removed this core...I guess those OEM ones aren't that great either

Actually a friend of mine had a cheap parts store one and it started to rust out again inside of a year.
I don't typically say something is bad without experience with it.

eBay is a fine place to buy stuff as long as you know what you're getting. I've bought tons of stuff on there.

hey guy yeah i am in the same boat took my car into the shop to have my clutch replaced since i work all the time and just didn't feel like getting my hands dirty when they told me my core support was rusted out so now i have to do a core swap also. but after looking around i found one not to sure how the quality is but looks decent enough with cheap shipping 153.00 for the core support and 25.00 shipping ----> NEW RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT 95-9 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE TURBO

I would make sure u do some upper body measurments. Do a couple measurments across the two frame rails and make sure they are the same when you go to weld the new section back in. Alot of people don't realize howmuch ## car can flex just by cutting that out.

Also when you drill out your holes for your plug welds you want to have no less than 20% of the number of factory spot welds, and do not place them in the same location as the factory welds. The spot welders we had at wyotech could weld threw 25 sheets of 18 gauge steel, they put out some seriouse pressure when they clamp down. This makes the area that was spit welded much more thin and could lead to weld failure if your in an accident
