Bad Vibration only when braking

Hi everyone,

I own a 1995 Eagle Talon eSI.

At first it started as a pedal pulsation then it got worse. Just the past 2 months when I brake between 40-60 mph the car vibrates bad. You can feel it all over.

So I bought new front rotors and new brake pads. Used the brake cleaner on the rotors and installed them. The car still vibrated afterwards. My uncle suggest I get the tires checked for balancing. The car would vibrate while it was going over 65 mph.

Turns out 3 tires threw weights. So now the car doesn't vibrate at high speeds. But when I hit the brakes in that speed range it vibrates the whole car still.
Under 40 mph the pedal just pulsates and gets slower as you come to a stop.

It kinda feels like the rear tires are bouncing or hopping but the whole entire car still vibrates. And when you are coming to a stop the car feels like it is wobbling like as if the tires are oval shaped type of feeling.

Is it possible the rear rotors are warped as well? I don't think the model car I have has ABS. So I can rule out a faulty ABS.

Any advice would be appreciated. Especially before I throw $100 at 2 rear rotors and rear brake pads.

Thanks,
Chris

You could have bad rear rotors or possibly have had your suspension jacked up by the tires being out of balance for too long. Have you checked your alignment too? I've had a problem with a old car of mine where when I would brake it would do the same thing and it ended up being from a bad alignment.

yes it is possible that the rear rotors are bad. i would also check the bushing in the upper arm on the rear suspension the wear out and cause some vibrations when braking. you might be able to pull the rotors and just take them to a local shop and have them mesured and see if they can be turned out. we have alot of people that bring in rotors all the time and we turn them as long as they are still within spec.

yea rear rotors are probably warped. replace those and your problem should go away. good news is they will be cheaper than your front pads and rotors.

It's warped rotors like everyone else is saying. Feel free to shake down the front end, but this is classic overtorquing of the wheels causing the rotors to get hot and warp.

Hi everyone.

Thank you for your replies.

2 hours ago I jacked the rear wheels one at a time to spin them.

When I spun them you could hear it in one area rub the pads as I turned the assembly by the wheel studs. Also can hear it rub when I spun the tire around.

Both sides were rubbing. I removed the caliper and pushed the pads together with my fingers and spun it by the wheel studs as it came around to where it was rubbing it was pushing the pads out against my fingers.

I assume this is where the awkward front to back wobble is coming from when I slow down. I am assuming the rear rotor are out of round. When I took the rear brake pads off. There was a half circle cut about 1/2" up the inside part of the pad and about 1/8" deep and 1/4" of the top of the pad was worn down about an 1/8 of an inch.

When I felt the back of the rotor it seems like the center of the rotor was worn down more and high points on top end and inside part of the rotor.

The rotors were cheap $27 so I went and bought new rear rotors and new rear brake pads. My uncle is going to put them on this evening for me.

I believe this will fix the problem. As for the suspension. It is solid.

I will give an update later tonight to let you all know if the new rear rotors fix the issue.

Thank you all,
Chris

Hi everyone

This is the 2nd update. My uncle put the new rear rotors and pads on.

The car does not vibrate anymore while applying the brakes. The inside of both rear rotors were so rusted there were some little chunks broken off and the inside brake pads were dinged up real bad on the tops.

Now the main issue has been taken care of. Now it is making scuffing rubbing type sounds when I drive. You can hear it more noticeably when you are slowing down.

Is the parking brake shoes rubbing. It makes this scuffing rubbing sound even when the brakes aren't applied.

Do I need to readjust the parking brakes since I replaced the rotors?

Nah it may be the backing plate rubbing on the rotor causing the noise, take the wheel off, use a flat end screw driver and push the plate away from the rotor

Hi again,

Yeah I took the brakes out spun the new rotor in the back. It is rubbing on the plate that is supporting all the parking brake parts. I am guessing that is the backing plate. Its not the big round part that I would refer to as the dust shield part of the plate but it is the smaller circle that is right by the parking brake pads. On the bottom there was bare metal rubbed off. This part of the backing plate is very sturdy and hard to move. I was using a screwdriver and a hammer to try to pop it back and smack down on the lip cause it seemed like it was out of round and had a high spot where it was rubbing. But it is still rubbing. I re adjusted the parking brakes so I know they weren't causing the rubbing. I am guessing this is just going to take some time to bed itself in the old hub and grind off the metal where it is rubbing by itself.

I am glad that nightmare is over. Cost me about $200 in parts ugh.
