im looking at buying this tsi thats by me. its mostly stock the engine was relbuilt but he told me that it leaks about a quart of oil about every 3000 miles. so im thinking that could just be like something like a gasket somewhere and not that big of a deal. please tell me if im wrong. also he told me that the 2nd gear syncro is bad. i dont really know what that is and i was wondering what does that cause to happen and is it repairable, and how much would it be. im on a small budget does this sound like something i wouldnt want to deal with or what. thanks alot

If you have a small budget don't buy a dsm. If you buy this car and want it to be reliable, tear it down rebuild the engine and take the tranny to a good shop for the syncro. Bad syncros cause grinding gears. That oil leak is something I'd want to know where it is and what's causing it. I'm warning you from experience, I bought one that needed a little work and it has turned into a full engine rebuild.

how much would the repair for the syncro be? the engine was already rebuilt but i guess it just leaks oil somewhere.

Just go on and figure 1400, because you may need a new tranny all together, if the synchro is bad it could be a sign of hard driving by the previous owner, not to mention the oil leak. Could be the headgasket(another couple hundred)

Every DSM on the planet has a tore up 2nd gear syncro at one time or another.
Before I would rip into the tranny, I would change out the oil and fill it with Pennzoil Syncromesh or similar and adjust the clutch.
