bad 2nd gear syncro??

im looking at buying this tsi thats by me. its mostly stock the engine was relbuilt but he told me that it leaks about a quart of oil about every 3000 miles. so im thinking that could just be like something like a gasket somewhere and not that big of a deal. please tell me if im wrong. also he told me that the 2nd gear syncro is bad. i dont really know what that is and i was wondering what does that cause to happen and is it repairable, and how much would it be. im on a small budget does this sound like something i wouldnt want to deal with or what. thanks alot

usually a bad synchro will not allow you to shift into the gear, or the gear will grind completely. Synchros allow the gears to "mesh" together allowing a smooth shift. Double clutching into the bad gear will make a better contact, and sometimes take away a grind altogether. But if its in need of a new 2nd gear that can get pricy....good luck man.

well i need 2 and 3 in mine but if i remember right the 2nd gear set is like $200 don't quote me and then it needs to be pressed apart and back together so your paying someone there and then when your that far replace the syncros there like $5 bucks and there ant many of them, also you will need new fluid which will cost like $35 then maby $25 for extra parts like axle seals or what ever so you are looking at about $300 for a total cost if you do all to work yourself. this isn't all that hard just time and tools. but good luck
