i have a 93 talon tsi fwd and i have to fix my exhaust so that it is emissions legal. there is already a 3" muffler on the car so i went and got a 3" downpipe and cat. i was gonna have someone custom make me a 3" pipe to go from the cat to the muffler when someone told me that i would get more power from my turbo by reducing my pipe to 2.25" i've always been under the impression that backpressure was a bad thing, but this guy was saying that i would actually GAIN power by adding backpressure. can someone help me out? thanks

Tell the guy he is retarded. He might be thinking of scavanging with a N/A, but that has nothing to do with backpressure. Backpressure will only hold back your turbo. If you want proof, take off everything behind the first 02 sensor and see how it runs.

Yes backpressure is your enemy in N/T's I think you need some or youll lose torque correct me if im wrong.

Nope. You need none in N/Ts. You're thinking of scavanging. Backpressure is even more of an enemy in turbos

Only 1 O2 on 1G's.

Yeah, take him for a ride in it with thin piping, then do it with the exhaust open from the O2 housing on. If he still sais back-pressure is a good thing, smack him. :rocks:

Anyway, like everyone else said, back-pressure always hurts performance. Just keep an eye out for boost creap with the 3" exhaust.

The down pipe will work miracles. Im used to v-8s and also am used to backpressure helpiing low end torque. But you dont need it on a turbo. They lag on bottom end anyways. But the better it flows the better it runs on top end. You'll even spool up sooner with a downpipe. Or so mine did.:thumb:

thanks for all the quick responses. i was almost positive that back pressure was bad but figured i'd run it on here just to make sure. should have known the guy didn't know what he was talking about, especially after he took my car out to road test the brakes and blew off my intercooler pipe

Backpressure is never a good thing. You're thinking of scavanging, where exhuast gasses draft behind eachother.

the less pressure the better turbo doesnt work like a natural aspiration we dont need a certain amount of backpressure to keep power do you know if the guy who told this to you graduated high school or has he ever worked on a car besides some civic or his moms accord or somethinROFL

Before you go slamming him, you should read up on this subject. NA motors don't need any back pressure either.

Is it just me or does the latest generation of DSM'ers seem lazier, dumber, and cockier?

Don't hate because we're cocky, retarded, and misinformed. :p Because not all of us are.:thumb:

Backpressure is never good, in any motor, for any reason, period. Get the biggest, least restrictive exhaust you can physically fit on the car.

And stop bashing Hondas, I'm tired of hearing it. Honda and rice are not interchangable words. And don't tell someone they didn't graduate from highschool when your paragraph long post included no capital letters and no punctuation.

Not just DSM'ers, people in general. A product of their environment.

But yes, you are correct.

Its a turbo car, you really dont even need a exhaust. If I could id just dump out the side of the front bumper. But thats loud and your ears would ring, dont listen to Old DINOSOUR"S when it comes to our cars.

Hell becaful even taking advice from your dad and older people who" used to race there stock 1969 camaro that was so fast blah blah 30 years ago or whatever"

There outta there times and not up to date at all, take it with a gain of salt and double check your info with wisemen and people on thie site.
