axle won't go in.

I pulled my axle the other day to put new circlip on it because When I tried to install it the first time with a circlip it wouldn't go all the way in. Tried it this time with a brand new one from the dealer and it does the same thing. come to find out it has a grove in the tranny for the circlip to sit in befor it gets all the way in. Anybody else notice this or is my tranny just screwed up?

p.s. 98 tsi fwd with a kaaz lsd, drivers axle.

but then again i caint rember i have a awd one now and i dont have clips on its drivers side

No that is the way it is suppose to be. You have to give it a good push to compress that clip and then it will slide in all the way. That clip holds the axle in place when it sits in the grove in the tranny. There is an easier way to get the clip into the tranny but I can't remember off the top of my head. Try putting the opening of the clip on the top, if that doesn't work put it on the bottom. One of those ways made it easier to get my axle in.
