I am replacing axle seals (output shaft seal) on 96 get and the drivers side went smooth but it seems like the passenger side axle is seating before it meets the seal. Ive rotated as I'm pressing in and its lined up and I can see the other axle turning. Like I said the axle is locked in but maybe a half in shy of seal. Has anyone had this issue?

Its not seated all the way then. Can you pull it back out? If you can check with a flashlight and make sure the locking 'clip' is not stuck in there. Also, I've had to use a dead blow hammer to full seat an axle before.

Ya I'm trying to pop it back out right now. And its in good which is why I think its seated. When I get it out ill look in and doublecheck but I have the old axle and the rings on it. This is the second attempt already.

A hammer and a block of wood will do the trick.Just take it and go around the whole outside of the axle where it goes in to the transmission so it goes in evenly.

If there's still a half inch between the sealing surface & the seal, it defently isn't seated correctly. Now, you did install the new seal in the correct spot? Believe it is possible to install the seal "deeper" then its supposed to be but even then, not sure if you could install it deep enough to be half inch off.

I'd remove the axle again, just to make sure everything looks good. Then, when installing axles, I slide the end into the tranny & then seat the other end in the lose suspension (both lower arm still attached to the knuckle but not attached at the other end). Then I pull back abit on the assembly & use all the weight of the lose suspension to lock the axle back into the tranny. This usually makes pretty easy work of snapping the lock rings back in place.

I always do it this way as well. (easy to get it in without a damage).

To the OP.

Can you take a pic, to see how it looks right at the seal and axle.

Looking at the axle, seal and tranny, to see how the axle is from the seal, and how the seal is from the tranny.

Once we see it, then we can tell if it is seat it or not.

But, do what (daren_p) said, That's the best thing to do.

Well I got it in. On the third attempt. I took it out and wire brushed it to make sure nothing was there, washed with parts cleaner, and applied a light coat of grease. Then like you said I used the weight of the whole assembly to swing it and she took it like a champ. Then a couple courtesy shots with the dead blow. Thanks for the help everyone. :thumb:
