OK so my awd trans went out i believe because it acts as if in neutral in every gear and if i put it in park it still rolls as if in neutral it doesnt stay in place.....so my car is awd and i have a spare 98 gst fwd trans i got with my engine just chilling in my garage is there any way i can put that trans in there since it will be cheaper?.......is their any how to's to this conversion i havent found anything really useful with search feature.....other than drop the tcase and driveshaft.....also what will i need to buy? thank you

If you keep the AWD trans in and drop the tcase and driveshaft it will hurt the VC running it that way. You can run the FWD trans in there but if your going back to AWD why do the work twice?

if both transmissions are A/T then all you'd have to replace are the front axles...
your going to be towing A LOT of extra weight in the rear thats un neccesary and the swap really makes no sense either, maybe financially for you?

maybe its you car telling you it wants a M/T swap?

im not going back to awd my plans are to just fix it with least money possible and sell it, but i want to make sure itll run right so next owner has no problems, and this tranny is just here so might as well have it running than in the garage since i need a running car right now

putting the fwd tranny in there since its readily available will save you money in repair cost to get it up and running to sell but, is it the right way to do it?

your cars VIN # is specific to that make/model year DSM. On your title its going to say GSX, according to insurance its a GSX, etc. etc. So anyone that looks at it is going to see GSX on paper but its actually a GST? You might be saving yourself some money to sell it but is it going to sell? probably not.

its a temporary fix to "get you by for now" so you can still drive it, I wouldn't try to sell it like that though... who knows what kind of headache could come out of that sale? there is a legal way to change the model for your cars VIN # but im sure its different from state to state. When i did my GST to GSX conversion i had the model changed on the title so I could sell it as a GSX if i ever wanted to and i could get the cheaper GSX insurance rates driving it.

from what i see your trying to sell this thing and save a few bucks doing it but how much are you losing selling it as a GST? GSX DSM's, at least in the san diego area, easily sell for $2,000-$3000 more if its a 2g.

just throwing all that out there so you can think about it first... just because its the quickest and cheapest way doesn't always mean its the right way. :thumb:

THANX FOR THE HELP MAN...so your in sd which is close to me do you where i can get a trans, torque converter and transfer case for cheap?

you dont need that.. Your clutch disc could have seperated... If you cant get it in any gear and you didnt hear any huge explosions in the tranny... You should research. It saves people lots of money

I kinda doubt a clutch disk is keeping him from putting it in park. It's more likely an axle broke.

i don't know of anyone personally but i do know someone that has a junkyard full of DSM's, he might have a A/T GSX lying around. let me call him later today and ill PM you back that way we can close this thread.

If you want to sell the car, you're going to be taking a big hit by selling it as a FWD. AWD's are worth a lot more. Plus it doesn't look good, saying "Oh, it's an AWD car but it's FWD because I had this tranny laying around", what are people going to think of your workmanship and how the car was taken car of if that's the way you do things? Fix it right or sell it as is.

Automatic AWD transmissions are a LOT less expensive, from what I've seen, than the manuals are, so I don't think you're going to have an issue finding a cheap tranny. You should be able to get something for $500 or less online, if that's actually what you need. Find someone more experienced check it over first to see.

You will also need to check the distance from the bellhousing to the cooler lines. They should be the same, but some are non lock up and about a 1/2" shorter. This will throw off your intermediate shaft and mounts.
