I had a blowout on the way to work about a month ago. It was a passenger front tire. I'm running 2gb Talon wheels with 225/45/17. The spare was from my Spyder FWD. It was a good 2in smaller in diameter than the Talon wheels/tires.

I was going to get it towed but with a flat and the fact that its lowered, there was no way to get it on a truck. I could barely get the scissor jack under it.

After debating what to do (5am - on the interstate) I through the spare on there. At this point the car was an inch off the ground in the front corner.

I had to drive about 10 miles. It was the worst drive of my life...

I stopped every .5 mile for 10min and idled. Never hit 30mph. By the time I got to the tire shop it was overheating...

I know this was a horrible idea, bad for all the drivetrain parts, etc.

What can be damaged? How do I check everything?

Also, does the factory AWD come with a full size spare?

They only came with a Donut. By stopping every half mile was the best thing you could do! It's when you don't stop and make the full trip, is when diffs get hot and stuff starts braking. I wouldn't worry to much about it. As for the overheating, do you have coolent issues? It was your engine, right?

Ok, I will thanks!

And for the coolant, it had to work so hard to barley move. It was boiling over when I got to the shop. No Tran temp light though.

Also, the spare was brand new, after that short trip, its bald....

I went with an evo 8 spare tire for caliper clearance issues but never really thought about it fixing a problem like this. I had to make a little extra space for the evo 8 wheel to fit in my spare well. I know its alot closer than the gst spare diameter so it should be better on the drivetrain.

Wouldn't the awd spare have to atleast come close to the factory wheel size in order to keep all the wheels turning at the same speed to not burn up the differential?

Factory awd spare is still a narrow donut but it is a larger diameter (I would assume matches the factory tire height but haven't measured to verify) vs the fwd spare

Correct you are.

My factory fwd spare for my spyder fit inside of the wheel well the awd spare does not. It is significantly larger. In a facotry 2g awd you lose almost 4 inches of useabe trunk height just to acomodate the spare.

I took out the 2" thick pieces of foam, moved the jack mount a little, and did some precision beating to the sides of the well and to the original spare cradle so it fit. Not sledge hammer stuff just tap tap it in. :D

Whats the OD of the awd spare? I'll check my evo spare and post the OD.

The evo 8 spare is about 23.5" OD. The 235/45 R17 tires I have are 25.4" OD new. I still wouldn't want to drive it far but it is a spare. There's only two things a spare is good for. Getting you on the road to get a new tire and throwing on a POS car and roasting them off for fun. LOL
