I have a quick question on the oil pan removal on an AWD car.

I already know you need to disconnect the exhaust, x-member, and T-Case. However, is it necessary to remove the drive shaft (that goes to the rear wheels under the car) when you remove the T-Case? The haynes manual says that you need to remove this, and from reading how to remove the shaft it looks like it could be a PITA. If I can get away with just removing the bolts in the T-Case which attach it to the transmission it would make my life much easier, does anyone have any experience/tips in this area? I'm new to the AWD world, loving it so far.

I dont think you HAVE to remove the DS to do that. The yolk should just slide out for you without major issues.

I honestly dont think I dropped the shaft when I pulled my trans to be honest. since its a 2 piece you can just move it out of the way.

Ok thanks, that's great news! I will try that... I already stripped one of the exhaust nuts, now i have to drive to my grandpa's to barrow a socket that has some kind of reversed screw-like locking mechanism that takes stripped nuts off... if that doesn't work i'm going to cut the damn bolt and be done with the rusted nut.

no, you do not. when i did mine i disconnected the Transfer case and just let it rest on something so it would not put to much pressure on anything. ( I was working on the ground so i just used a old oil holder)

Good Luck!

Note : you do have to take the drivers cv axle loose or out, i cant remember which.:

When you remove the transfer case the drive shaft yoke just pulls out from the end of the Transfer case and you can move it aside. You don't have to remove it from the rear diff. When you remove the drive shaft from the transfer case keep the end of the transfer case tilted up a little or the oil will come out from the end.

If you have to remove the tcase you can safely leave the shaft connected to the case as long as it doesnt put a lot of stress on the joint...just put the case on some bricks

Wow, thanks for all the answers guys... i'm going to remove the Drive Shaft..

just kidding... LOL thanks

if you pull the transfer case, the driveshaft should slide out of the t-case with ease. removing the oilpan isnt that bad... its half a day if your lazy like me. its better to fix a leak than to keep buying oil, and making all the roads slick. Happy new year all! Pm me with any questions, i love to help!
